Members of the Downeast Defenders Motorcycle Club made the long drive from Augusta to Cary Medical Center in Caribou on Sept. 5 to present a check to Erica Laplante RN, a certified diabetes educator at Cary. The Downeast Defenders is a chapter of the Defenders Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, one of over 60 chapters nationwide. President of the Club Jason Fowler said that the group makes a fund-raising ride each August in Calais called the Diabetes Dash, which is similar to the Ride Aroostook event put on by Cary, except with the difference being motorcycles instead of bicycles. All the proceeds go to Camp Adventure, which is a Maine-based summer camp for children with Type 1 diabetes. This is the Defenders’ second year sponsoring the camp. Pictured, from left, are Chris McCarthy, Albert Alley, Harold Mulholland, Laplante, Fowler, Justin Doran and Joe Bartlett.
