To the editor:
If anyone is wondering why other people signed the petition to mandate a secession hearing before the city council, one reason may be that they weren’t told exactly what they were signing. When I was approached for my signature, the man told me that it was a meeting to lower taxes, and that’s all he talked about. He did not once mention the word “secession” or even try to discuss the other issues that would go along with it.
He couldn’t believe I would refuse to sign. As I told him, I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t want to pay less taxes, but this is not the way to go about it. Caribou is a decent, hardworking community and the last thing it needs is a handful of trouble makers who want to divide the townspeople against each other.
