Visiting recently in Island Falls has been Neil and Katie (Lord) Smith, who hail from Concord, New Hampshire. While here they spent several days at the family cottage on Mattawam-keag Lake, enjoyed kayaking around the upper Lake , visiting with me (her aunt), and also touring the northern part of Baxter Park in hopes of seeing a big moose. Alas, they were not that lucky.
And also visiting in the area have been Joyce and Diane Curry, who returned just in time to see some of the activities held in Sherman during Old Home Week and to also have some of the famous pumpkin doughnuts that are made on Labor Day and enjoyed by many every year. While here they opted not to stay at the Curry homestead and instead spent their time at Vacationland Estates, visiting friends and relatives from their home away from home.
I have not had much activity in my backyard this past week. The big black crows seem to avoid the area where the lone gray squirrel attacked them. I haven’t spotted the squirrel at all, but imagine he is laying in wake waiting for a chance to attack the big birds again.
I am still swimming about four times a week at Vacationland Estates pool and have many friends who join me there all week. Friend John White, who used to be a regular at the pool, hasn’t been there at all this summer and all the ladies who got to know him miss seeing him there. We hope that some day he will show up.
One morning lately, on my way to get the daily paper, I saw the fawns way down back busily grazing away and they didn’t dash away into the woods when they spied me. Did see their mother one afternoon, late, and she was way down back too, where I imagine they feel safer. The fawns have grown a lot but still have their spots.
