Clark is new pastor of Baptist Church — Rev. Clifford I. Clark of St. John, N.B., has accepted a call to become pastor of the F. B. Church in Houlton. Mr. Clark is a graduate of Arcadia College and Newton Theological Seminary and prior to coming to Houlton was pastor of the Free Baptist Church in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
Business Directory — The following advertisements appear in the newspaper’s business directory this week: Parker M. Ward, M.D., Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, also glasses fitted; Dr. F. O. Orcutt, dentist, “Teeth filled without pain by the new analgesic method, absolutely safe,” and Albert E. Klein, Teacher of the Violin, The Klein Studio, Main Street, Houlton.

No Sunday movies: A close vote — The proposal to permit the showing of motion pictures on Sunday in Houlton was defeated this week by 575 to 509. The proposal lost by a difference of only 66 votes.
Of local interest — John Madigan has returned to Boston to resume his studies at Tufts Medical School. Miss Crete Lambert, who has been employed at Grindstone Inn, Winter Harbor, during the summer, arrived home for a vacation with her parents Prin. And Mrs. M. B. Lambert, Court Street. F. T. Cheney, veterinarian of Houlton, was in town inoculating cattle; several farmers have lost valuable cattle due to a distemper.

Broadway comes to Ricker — A top hit Broadway show will be staged at Ricker’s Putnam Auditorium on Oct. 1. The Touring Theater will present the only performance in Maine of Edgar Lee Master’s “Spoon River,” based on Master’s “Spoon River Anthology.” It is the only non-musical show of the 1963-64 season to win the unanimous rave reviews of Broadway critics.

FIRST HAIRCUT — Charles Edward Clark, 14-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Clark of Houlton, sits very quietly and tries to cooperate as he receives his very first haircut from local barber Ernest Elliott.
Women’s softball All-Stars win title — The All-Star team from Houlton Women’s Softball League rallied last Wednesday to edge Presque Isle, 15-14 to win the County championship. Members include: Kay McInnis, Peg Chapman, Diane Ross, Judy Oliver, Joan Ivey, Pat Guy, Sheila Putnam, Alice Duncan, Tig Benn, Ann Alexander, Sally Rooney, Sylvia Thompson, Lillian Roy, Sara LaVasseur, Lois Tracy, Joyce Harris, and Beulah Malone; coached by Billy Putnam and Walter Burlock.

Houlton golfers set new low — The Houlton Golf Squad set a new low record for the County last Wednesday with a score of 160. Low medalist was Sam Faluso who shot a 36; Tyson Perry scored a 39; Nathan DeWitt scored a 40; and Aaron Peabody a 41. Chris Cheney and Daniel Peabody each shot a 44. Eric Cowperthwaite had a 45; Chris O’Leary shot a 47 while Jason Hutchinson and Jeff Howland each had a 52 score.
Amity’s Glidden is Navy commander — An Amity native, Capt. Eric S. Glidden, has made U.S. naval history, not once but twice, with his promotion through the ranks to become commander of the USS Pigeon. In 1970, he became the youngest warrant officer promoted to rank of commander by the Navy; and this past summer he was made captain of the Pigeon, a double-hulled special operations ship.
