Ellsworth latest stop for XC teams
The Presque Isle cross country teams were in Ellsworth Saturday for the annual invitational meet, which was highlighted by junior Jason Bartley’s fifth-place performance out of 90 runners.
Bartley crossed the finish line of the three-mile course in a time of 18 minutes and 25.64 seconds. He was 45 seconds behind the winner, George Stevens Academy sophomore John Hassett (17:40.42).
Wildcat runners following Bartley were senior Cristian Nunez (18th, 19:27.88), sophomore Jacob O’Berry (41st, 20:50.7), senior Noah Rossignol (42nd, 20:54.39) and freshman Dustin Alward (43rd, 20:58.3).
Presque Isle placed fifth out of 12 teams, scoring 141 points. Caribou was the meet winner with 56, followed by Orono (94), GSA (107) and Mount Desert Island (133).
The ’Cats finished ahead of John Bapst, Old Town, Sanford, Central of East Corinth, Foxcroft Academy, Bucksport and host Ellsworth.
Leading the way for the Presque Isle girls was junior Mandy Graham, who fashioned a 15th-place effort with a time of 23:04.44.
Freshman Isabelle Jackson came in 25th in 23:55.06. Juniors Karen Jones (26:37.48) and Alyssa Sweeney (26:37.85) were 46th and 47th, respectively. The final Wildcat scorer was freshman Ellie Goheen, who was 57th at 27:38.91.
The girls’ race featured 75 runners, with Mattanawcook of Lincoln’s Tia Tardy winning in 20:17.84.
PI came in sixth place out of nine teams, scoring 160 points. Orono took the victory with 49, while GSA (63), Caribou (78), MDI (95) and John Bapst (111) were next in consecutive order.
Finishing behind the Wildcats were Old Town, Sanford and Hermon.
Caribou will host a meet on Saturday afternoon, with Presque Isle, Washburn, Fort Kent, Greater Houlton Christian Academy and Limestone-MSSM all planning to participate.
