Taste of China, Military Street in Houlton, was the restaurant of choice for the Purple Hat Society meeting Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Thirteen ladies in their colorful hats of all sizes, some with brims and some without, and one guest were present. Leader Charlotte Marley, who instituted the society in the Smyrna-Oakfield-Houlton area, was there to greet each lady.
Before the meal, Lois Downing offered the blessing. After the meal, each lady gave her name to correspond with the first letter of her given name. Some names are serious and others are outrageous, to say the least. Charlotte made an album containing the names of ladies — deceased, those who had moved outside the area, or those who dropped out for various reasons. Arlene Friel is on the sick list. Charlotte urged the ladies to give her a call or send a greeting card. For a card, her address is in Smyrna Mills, Maine.
September was an unusual month in that we, the Purple Hat ladies, had no birthdays, and Cindy Gray informed us of that. The drawings for the month were Alma Clark and Lois Downing. No conclusion was made for the next setting of Purple Hat — a discussion on that subject took place. Cindy Gray had a humorous reading as well as Charlotte.
The next meeting will be Sept. 14 and we will be notified as to the place.
Attending from Cary were Denise Clark and Joanne Scott; from Houlton, Lois Downing and Wannetta Townsend; Dyer Brook, Marie Gillotti with her granddaughter Carissa Silvestri from Vermont; Oakfield, Elaine Barrett, Dolores Locke, Alma Clark, Bernice Campbell and Evelyn Johnston; Smyrna, Cindy Gray and Charlotte Marley; and New Limerick, Mildred Gagnon.
Any lady from Houlton and the surrounding area is eligible to join the Purple Hat group. No dues but $1 is collected at each meeting for various reasons. You may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 for details or any of the above mentioned ladies. The whole idea is for fun.
