Time ripe for river cleanup

To the editor:
The water level in the river is the lowest that I have ever seen. Yesterday as I walked over the Gateway Bridge I noticed how much rusting metal, poles, wires, etc. that are now exposed. I am curious to know if there is a group that may be interested in doing a clean up of this area.

There are also artifacts that could be recovered and turned over to the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum. There are huge pieces of granite on the river bank that could easily be transformed into a bench.
Under the North Street bridge there is a very large old log that I believe was one used in the older North Street Bridge. If that log could be winched from its current location or moved into the water and floated out; it could also be used as a seating bench. It would be nice to use some of the history in the current Riverside Park.
I called and asked the town manager if he knew of any groups. I know the riverside cleanup happens in the spring but never involves the actual river. In the spring when a lot of cleaning occurs; that is when the river is at its highest.
I believe a cleanup of those old rusting exhaust pipes, wires, etc. would make a nice worthwhile community service project. What do you think?
