100 Years Ago-Sept. 24, 1914

• Of local interest — Mrs. Glidden was on the East Washburn road one day last week selling soaps, essences, etc. Glen Cheney, the electrician, has bought a lot on Hines street and is building a house on the same. The starch factory of T. H. Phair in this village (Washburn) started up Monday for the season’s grating.

 

75 Years Ago-Sept. 28, 1939

• Lions Air Races attract thousands — An estimated crowd of over 3,000 attended the second annual Caribou Lions Club air races held Sunday at the Caribou Municipal Airport. Stunting, racing, bomb dropping and passenger flying with over a dozen planes entered proved of great interest.
• Farnham joins Britian’s air force — Norman Farnham will join the Royal Air Forces of Great Britain on Oct. 10. Mr. Farnham has been a popular pilot stationed at the Caribou Municipal Airport. He holds a commercial pilot’s license and owns a Piper Cub plane.

50 Years Ago-Sept. 24, 1964

• Liquor store plans withdrawn — State Liquor Commission administrator H. D. Stover announced that Richard Sampson of Sampson’s Supermarkets had “graciously accepted our withdrawal as a prospective tenant in his new facility.” The contemplated move opposed by church groups and business interests and the commission finally decided against relocating its store.
• Aroostook Boosters for LBJ — Aroostook County Democrats are planning a major construction to what is expected to be a rousing reception for President Lyndon B. Johnson at Portland Monday afternoon. “Aroostook Boosters for LBJ” are organizing a motorcade that will start as far north as St. Francis and proceed all the way to Portland.

25 Years Ago-Sept. 27, 1989

• Caribou students featured in book — A group of Caribou students have their picture in a new elementary reference book published by Children’s Press. The fourth-graders, photographed by Oscar Nelder, were students of Darlene Nelder. They were: Shawn Morin, Eric Theriault, Keith McGraw, Joey Cowett and Carissa Goerdtd.
• Duprey is Hall of Fame inductee — Caribou resident Robert Duprey was inducted into the Husson College Sports Hall of Fame during an awards presentation Saturday in Bangor. Duprey is a 1966 graduate who excelled in both basketball and baseball during his college years.
