The beginning of harvest recess for many area schools means an abbreviated soccer schedule in the region until mid-October, but last week still featured plenty of action.
The Caribou girls have displayed a relentless offensive attack over the past couple of weeks, averaging 6.5 goals per game during their current four-match winning streak. The Vikings registered a 5-1 home win over Madawaska last Tuesday before stopping Ellsworth on the road Saturday, 6-1.
Sarah Doak scored three times and Bria Judd added the other two goals in the win over the Class C Owls. Maddie Doucette picked up a pair of assists, while Doak and Searra Herbert added one each to back the goaltending of Morgan Outing, who had five saves on six shots.
On the road four days later, Caribou tallied five first-half goals en route to the triumph. Judd scored four times, including three over a 16-minute stretch in the first 40 minutes of play.
Gabrielle Marquis opened the scoring by converting on a Hope Shea corner kick. Judd then scored her three, with Shea, Doak and Maria Espinosa notching assists, before Doak closed out the first-half scoring with a goal off Shea’s third assist of the half.
Lauren Hale put Ellsworth on the board less than six minutes into the second half, but Judd scored off a cross by Herbert nearly three minutes later for the game’s final goal.
Outing and Kerrigan Manter shared goalkeeping duties and made eight saves on 10 shots.
Eagle goalie Callie Hammer had 14 saves on 21 shots.
Caribou is now 4-2 entering this afternoon’s game at Old Town. The Vikings host Mount Desert Island in a key match Saturday at 1 p.m.

Ellsworth boys 2, Caribou 1 — Michael Hunter scored off a direct kick with 18:30 remaining to draw Caribou to within a goal, but the Vikings were unable to punch in the equalizer in a loss to an always-talented Ellsworth squad on the road Saturday.
Connor Maguire and Lukas Firestone had first-half goals for the Eagles.
Ethan Plourde saved 13 of 19 shots in goal for the Vikings, who fell to 1-4-1 with the loss.
Limestone-MSSM boys 5, Hodgdon 1 — Tyler Simmons had goals within 2:15 of each other early in the second half to power the Eagles to their first win of the season Friday in Limestone.
Zeb Keith-Hardy, Tobyn Blatt and Dylan Nadeau had the other goals for Limestone-MSSM, now 1-6 on the campaign. The Eagles had beaten Wisdom earlier in the season, but the Maine Principals’ Association wiped out the win after it was discovered Limestone-MSSM used an ineligible player.
Limestone-MSSM 2, Hodgdon 0 — The Eagle girls also won their first game Friday, thanks to goals by Bailey Chalmers and Ellyzabeth Bencivenga. Jacinta Deschaine assisted on Bencivenga’s tally, which iced the victory with 15:44 left in the match.
Jackie Peers gained the goalie shutout with 22 saves on 32 shots.
Ashland girls 8, Washburn 2 — Savannah Flint’s hat trick Thursday powered the visiting Hornets to their second win over the Beavers this season.
Ashland took a 7-0 record into Tuesday’s home match against Van Buren.
Mackenzie Worcester scored both Washburn goals, with Joan Overman assisting on one of them. The Beavers have now lost four of their last five and are 7-4 overall.
Ashland boys 2, Washburn 1 — Noah Farley recorded the Beavers’ lone goal in Thursday’s home loss to the Hornets.
Michael Cook and Cody Blair had the goals for Ashland. The two teams had played to a 1-1 tie in Ashland Sept. 8.
Washburn is now 7-3-1, with the next game scheduled Oct. 14 after harvest recess is completed.
Van Buren boys 3, Limestone-MSSM 2 — Andre Rossignol broke a tie with a penalty kick coming with 90 seconds left in regulation, leading the host Crusaders past the Eagles last Wednesday.
Hardy had both Eagle goals and Sam Kupiec picked up an assist for Limestone-MSSM.
Van Buren girls 2, Limestone-MSSM 0 — The Eagles were shut out for the fourth time this season last Wednesday as Leah Gendreau and Felisha Bouchard scored for victorious and home team Van Buren.
Caribou boys 0, Madawaska 0 — The Class B Vikings and Class C Owls played to a scoreless tie last Tuesday, despite Caribou owning a 19-7 advantage in shots on goal.
The game was played during a heavy fog on Caribou’s field. Plourde had four saves for Caribou for his second shutout of the fall.
