Many hands involved in a successful downtown

IN THE CITY

On Thursday, June 1, 2014, the Presque Isle Downtown Revitalization Committee held its second annual Recognition Celebration. The event was held in the recently renovated Turner Memorial Library.

The purpose of the event is to reflect upon the past year, celebrate the successes in the downtown, thank the extremely helpful volunteers, and recognize the businesses that have recently invested in the downtown. We also give a big thanks to all the volunteers who share their passion for Presque Isle’s downtown and help with beautification efforts.
Here are some of the individuals and groups that were recognized for their volunteer efforts:
• Dr. Chungzen Wang and his great group of students. They created the first Presque Isle Bike Path and Walking Trail map designed to promote the downtown to residents and visitors alike.
• The Healthy Aroostook staff; Jo-Ellen Kelley and Carol Bell were extremely helpful with working with the committee to find ways of promoting a healthy lifestyle.
• Roberta Griffiths, Martha LaPointe, Ann Wight, and all members of the Flower Bucket Brigade for maintenance of the many flower barrels in the downtown.
• The many members of Elks Lodge No. 1954 for the Riverside BBQ & Street Fair. Many people visit the area for these two fantastic family events.
• Mrs. Kinney’s high school class for the amazing beautification project in the State St. Alleyway. They did a great job designing the mural and painting it. It is great to see students actively engaged in the community.
• The Presque Isle Police Department and the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce for the Movies in the Park series. The screen was purchased through drug forfeiture funds to promote family friendly events.
• The Presque Isle Fire Department for the holiday light decorations and watering the flowers during the hot summer.
The businesses that we recognized for recent investment in the downtown included Precision Tattoo, Eugene McLaughlin, Mike’s & Sons, Northern Business Products, Breads to Threads and Player Designs.
We also recognized all the Riverside Public Market Vendors for participating in the inaugural year of the market.
The committee always welcomes volunteers to their meetings that take place at 7:30 a.m. in the library on the second Wednesday of the month. Agendas are available on the city’s website.
