My, my, the autumn leaves are simply spectacular this year. Even the heavy rain from Sunday morning did not seem to knock them down. My wife and I took a drive up to Stockholm Sunday afternoon and the views were breathtaking. The rolling hills of that town have some of the most scenic views and vistas to be seen. Other towns also have great views to be had. Perham and New Sweden come to mind as some of the most awesome, but all of our communities have great drives and views.
Two couples from away stopped in this past week to look at the museum. Both were from places where there were not seasons like we have in the Northeast. Neither had ever been here before and simply chose the area at random. Both were so enthusiastic about the area they were visiting. I love to hear that and it fills me with pride. I wish everyone could get that perspective. I know they stayed locally and asked me for a few recommendations for where to eat. So that’s good for business too.
Perhaps we need to do more to get the word out about our scenery and beauty. I can see such a message reaching retired couples like the ones from this past week. But not only that, I think motorcycle enthusiasts would love riding up here as we have great roads, no congestion, great local eateries, places to stay and some of the best of nature seen anywhere.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, Oct. 18, as we will have a candidate meet and greet starting at 9 a.m. We have invited all candidates for Caribou City Council seats, school board seats and even the candidates for the State Senate for District 1, Peter Edgecomb and Charles Kenneth Theriault. Each candidate will also have an interview session on camera with Natalie De La Garza of the Aroostook Republican. Those interviews will be made available on the local television channel for the two weeks prior to the election on November 4.
I cannot stress this enough. Be involved with the process. Know who your candidates are and what they stand for. Make informed decisions. The city, your Chamber and the Aroostook Republican are doing all we can to help you do just that.
At a time when our children are pulled in lots of directions, some of them not so good, it is really great to see how active and committed Scouting is in this area. The Cub Scouts had their annual invitation to adventure for grades 1–5 at Caribou Scout Hall on Aldridge Drive. That building is amazing and just another example of the commitment of local people to bring children these wonderful programs to give them positive experiences on citizenship.
If you missed the event and would still like your children to participate, call Troy at 446-6224 or email cariboucubscouts184@gmail.com.
Oh, and by the way, that building at 71 Aldrich Drive is available for rent for parties and has a kitchen and all you need to throw a great shebang. To reserve the hall, call 227-5894.
Sleeper’s will kick off their 100th anniversary celebration on Saturday, Oct. 11. They have an amazing sale flyer planned, “with prices you haven’t seen in years.” Now would be a great time to get on Dave’s e-mail list so you get one of those flyers! E-mail him at dave@sleepersmarket.com or give him a call to add you to his list. They are also giving away a $500 oil or pellet prize during the event and have other great things planned. Happy Anniversary!
Have a great week!
