PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook County Task Force on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault is hosting a free training geared toward law enforcement officers, law enforcement students, and advocates for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault Oct. 14-15. The training will take place at the University of Maine at Presque Isle Campus Center.
Keynote speaker Lt. John Tiplady will welcome participants on both days of training and will also be facilitating breakout sessions on the important topic of strangulation.
This training also includes opportunities for law enforcement officers to receive training on ODARA (Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment) presented by Margo Batsie of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, and a new domestic violence supplement presented by District Attorney Todd Collins.
A wide variety of other topics will be covered in breakout sessions including child abuse investigation, sexual assault, child interview and reporting, elder abuse, addiction and violence, human trafficking, and dealing with autistic individuals.
In order to properly arrange seating and light refreshments for this two-day training, participants are asked to pre-register online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6ZRM85T. By pre-registering, participants can choose specific breakout sessions to attend on specific days of the training.
This training is only a first step in developing additional techniques and methods to help ensure safety of victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence. The training has appropriate timing as October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
