• A.T. Cushman shot in Collins Pond a water bird, resembling a dove in coloring, but of a variety unknown in this vicinity. Charles E. Oak will have it mounted by a taxidermist.
• Charles Whittier has opened a store corner of Brodway and Water streets.

• Petroleum prices — In their advertisement, Hopkins Bros. of Fort Fairfield offer the following products: their “best” gasoline, 15 cents (gallon); gasoline by the drum, 14 cents (gallon); high-grade Texico motor oil, 50 cents/gal.; pan hard motor oil, 40 cents/gal.; and 160-test kerosene, 14 cents per gallon.
• Methodists help war effort — The People’s M. E. Church reports that “Peace Sunday” was recently observed and a goodly sum of money came in to help the sufferers as a result of the war.

• New Sweden hosts fifth Frost Fair — The fifth annual Frost Fair sponsored by the Luther League in New Sweden will be held Oct. 18-19 at the Town Hall. Under the theme, “The Miniature World’s Fair,” the hall will be decorated with flags and colors of the nations of the world. Also, a Swedish meatball supper will be served.
• Of local interest — Two new neon signs that add materially to the appearance of Sweden street at night have recently been placed by Rudy Theatre and M. D. McGrath. Eugene Hale, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Hale, left for Bangor where he is attending Beal Business College. Mrs. Leila Bull resumed her teaching duties at Perham Monday.

• USO hosts Opera Workshop — Students of Virginia Sayre, who conducts the “Opera Workshop,” gave a performance before a large audience at the Caribou USO on Sunday. Carol White and Brenda Bodenheimer performed the roles of Madame Butterfly and Suzuki from Puccini’s opera. Sylvia Weinberg and Daniel Ladner performed the roles of Gilda and Duke in the garden scene of Verdi’s Rigoletto.
• Salmon restoration in Aroostook — The restoration of a salmon run in the Aroostook River received major impetus today from a statement issued by C. Hazen Stetson, president of Maine Public Service Company. The company is making the initial installations to provide for fish handling equipment in connection with the new unit being installed at its Tinker Plant at Aroostook Falls, N.B.

• Loring tanker explodes in air — A four-man KC-135A tanker crew from Loring Air Force Base perished last Wednesday morning when the airplane exploded in air about 15 miles from the base, scattering debris and charred wreckage over a densely-wooded area in Perth-Andover, New Brunswick.
• Maine Yankee supports Cary— Maine Yankee recently presented $500 to Cary Medical Center to support two programs. One half will support the Gary LaPointe Memorial Organ Donation Program. The second half will support the Hayward Center, a private in-house suite of rooms for families of terminally ill patients.
