100 Years Ago-Oct. 14, 1914

Escapes at Houlton Jail — Sensational and mysterious escapes of prisoners from the Houlton jail have been going on at various intervals for the past month. The first occurred when the bars in the door of the basement were sawed off. A window was next attacked and several men made their escape. Every effort has been made to keep news of these escapes from becoming public and a vigorous hunt has been conducted.
Baseball good for business — Leighton & Feeley, the progressive druggists made a hit with baseball fans when they placed a bulletin in front of their store recording the World Series inning scores received by Western Union Tel. Company. Large crowds have watched the score with interest.

Prominent local woman: Alice Ingersoll Thornton — A recent publication, “American Women,” a biographical dictionary of leading women including Eleanor Roosevelt, Pearl Buck and others, has listed a biography of Alice Ingersoll Thornton of Washington, D. C., formerly of Houlton and now assistant to the director of the American Junior Red Cross.
Box socials benefit schools — The Davis School in Hersey and the Shin Pond School in Mt. Chase were the beneficiaries of two successful box suppers and socials. They raised $26 and $52 respectively to be used to furnish playground equipment for the school yards.

Haley Fund aids plane searches — The Haley Memorial Fund, a tribute to the late Everett and Leita Haley of Houlton, has been established for the purpose of promoting air safety and to aid pilots financially in the event of an air search. Mr. and Mrs. Haley died when their single engine plane crashed Sept. 9 at Hancock, N.H. He was chief of the Federal Aviation Agency’s flight service station at Houlton and safety officer of the Flying Club.
Paradis earns bowling fame — Ken Paradis, representing the Houlton Bowling Center, came home with $125 Saturday after winning his first bowling match on the weekly television series from Bangor. Paradis actually lost the first and third strings, but won the middle string by a 24-pin margin to give him the close victory.

Literacy Coalition profiles Eddie Murphy — In their “Aroostook Literacy Column,” the ALC profiled comedian and actor, Eddie Murphy who, since 1982 had been a Saturday Night Live writer and starred in four films: 48 Hours, Trading Places, Best Defense and Beverly Hills Cop.
Houlton hosts Cruise Missile forum — “Cruise Missile Training over Maine: Pro and Con,” will be the topic of the next Concerned Citizens of Southern Aroostook forum to be held Oct. 20 at the United Methodist Church in Houlton.

TV WORTHY — Ken Paradis, representing the Houlton Bowling Center, came home with $125 after winning his first bowling match on the weekly television series from Bangor. Paradis, the first bowler from Aroostook County on the circuit, defeated defending champion Art Gurney of the Metro Bowl Lanes of Waterville by a score of 397-385.
