LINCOLN, Maine — Hopes of repeating as Penobscot Valley Conference league champs were dashed for the Houlton golf team Thursday as the Shires fell just two strokes short of its mark.
Houlton finished as runners-up to Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln in the PVC championship played under sunny, but breezy conditions at Jato Highlands Golf Course. The Shires fired a 346 over 18 holes, while Mattanawcook shot 344 on the day.
Houlton was the two-time defending Eastern Class C PVC champs.

By finishing second, the Shires qualified for the Class C State competition, scheduled for Saturday at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro.
Ryan Dee continued his impressive season, shooting an 81 on the day, which was second lowest in Class C. Cameron Clark was just two strokes behind with an 83, while Parker Brewer shot 89, Drew Marino shot 97 and Kyle Bouchard shot 93.
Dee, Clark and Brewer all qualified for the individual state competition to be held Saturday, Oct. 18.
Other team scores for Class C were: Penobscot Valley, 405; George Stevens Academy, 405; Calais, 417; Bucksport, 422; Orono, 426; Searsport, 437; Dexter, 438; and Penquis, 480.
