Fire causes smoke damage
BRIDGEWATER, Maine — A chimney fire early the morning of Sept. 24, 2014 caused minor damage to a Tannery Street residence.
“The Bridgewater Fire Department was summonsed to an early-morning report of a chimney fire on Tannery Street on Wednesday. Just after 5 a.m., 13 firefighters from the BFD responded,” said Matthew Powers, BFD training officer.
Smoke was heavy when crews arrived.
“Upon arrival, heavy smoke conditions were found. Bridgewater Fire worked on the flue for over two and a half hours to ensure the fire would not spread to the structure,” said Powers.
A dirty chimney was blamed for the fire.
“The fire was a result of too much creosote building up in the chimney lining,” he said.
Powers said “while this structure only suffered minor smoke damage, the Bridgewater Fire Department reminds all homeowners to make sure their chimneys are kept clean.”
While the heating season is just beginning for this year, Powers said last year’s buildup may still be in chimneys if they weren’t cleaned in the spring.
The BFD was assisted at the scene by Crown Ambulance. No injuries were reported as a result of the chimney fire.
