100 Years Ago-Oct. 21, 1914

Hupmobile dealership scouts Aroostook — A party of three gentlemen representing distributors of the Hupmobile auto, were in town Sunday and Monday to place an agency in Aroostook County. They left Tuesday for the northern part of the county.

Fall weddings — Friends of Clinton H. Judkins and Alma E. Rideout, both of Houlton, will be interested to hear of their marriage which took place in Woodstock N. B. on Oct. 14; Mr. Judkins is stenographer for B. & A. and Mrs. Judkins was bookkeeper in the Aroostook Tel. & Tel. Co. office. The marriage of Miss Mazie Hall and Joseph E. Hogan of this town took place this morning; Mrs. Hogan was has been as bookkeeper for Dunn Furniture Co. and Mr. Hogan has been a mail carrier on the Main street route.

K of C observes Columbus Day — The annual Columbus Day supper and program was held last Thursday evening at the K of C hall where over 100 members, wives and guests were present. As has been the custom the past five years, the Knights have sponsored an essay contest for seniors at Houlton High School and Ricker Classical Institute.
Earthquake awakens Houlton — Houlton residents felt the tremors of an earthquake just before 7 o’clock. Noticeable here for only a few seconds, the shocks were severe enough to cause windowpanes to rattle and to awaken sound sleepers.

Pie rivalry: Linneus vs. Hodgdon — Among the many items to be included in the annual Rotary Radio Auction will be home-cooked foods. These have proved very popular in the past and indeed a rivalry has developed to see whether Linneus or Hodgdon is producing the best homemade mincemeat.

New animal refuge for Houlton — The President of the Houlton Humane Society, Mrs. Isabelle R. Hess, has announced the establishment of a new animal shelter at Burleigh Heights, to be known as the Animal Refuge Farm and is managed by Mr. and Mrs. Earl Williams.

Cohen business visits — U.S. Senator Bill Cohen will visit Houlton Saturday afternoon, cutting the ribbon to open the new Sherman Williams paint supply center and attending FA Peabody Company’s open house. He is also expected to tour the central business district.
Pony Club holds show — The Meduxnekeag Pony Club Dressage Show held at Dansu Farm drew an excellent turnout. A total of 37 tests were ridden by riders who came from all over Aroostook. The adult high point riders were tied with 73 percent each, Patricia LeVasseur riding Lieutenant Lassitor and Susan Pierce with Dansu Dulcimer.
