ACAP and Goughan’s team up
to offer fresh fruits and veggies
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — There is a common belief that fresh fruits and vegetables are not easily accessible or affordable, particularly for low to moderate income families.
Again this summer, Aroostook County Action Program, Inc., (ACAP) and Goughan’s Berry Farm tried to dispel that myth.
Nearly once a week during the months of July, August and September, Goughan’s Berry Farm set up a stand to offer their local fruits and vegetables at 44 Park Street in Presque Isle where ACAP Family Services provides Head Start, Early Head Start, Child Care, WIC (Supplemental Food for Women, Infants and Children program), Oral Health clinics and other services to low-income families.
“Goughan’s Berry Farm has been wonderful,” explains Sue Powers, senior manager of Family Services. “Nearly once a week. they arrived with a truck full of fresh produce. The stand was open to the entire community and was a particularly great opportunity to show our clients that in-season fruits and vegetables are accessible and affordable. WIC clients are able to use farmer’s market food vouchers, making it possible for those on a tight budget to enjoy local produce.”
The market’s final day was Sept. 17, with plans to return next summer.
