Houlton girls alone atop Class C soccer standings

With about a week of the 2014 fall high school soccer season left to play and playoffs just around the corner, area teams took to the fields last week with important tournament points on the line. As of the latest Heal Point Standings (games completed through Oct. 14), the undefeated Houlton girls stood atop the Class C East ranks with more than 35 index points separating first and second place.
Other southern Aroostook squads, including the Southern Aroostook, East Grand and Hodgdon girls and Southern Aroostook and Katahdin boys will likely need playoff wins to make the tourney quarterfinal round.

The following is a summary of last week’s games:
Houlton girls 6, Madawaska 1
The latest win for coach Tim Tweedie’s Shiretown girls took place Monday at Madawaska, as freshman Kolleen Bouchard notched four of her team’s six goals in the lopsided 6-1 victory. The win improved Houlton’s record to 11-0-1.
Also scoring for the winners were Emma Drew and Emily Mooers. Goalie Katie Condon made four saves on seven Owl shots.
The Lady Shires’ next game is today (Wednesday) at Lincoln against 13th-place Mattanawcook Academy and they wrap up their regular season Saturday at home against the second-seeded Red Riots of Orono, who they defeated 3-1 on Sept. 20.
Houlton girls 9, Calais 1
Last Saturday at Calais, Houlton pelted two Blue Devil goalies with 30 shots as they rolled to a 9-1 victory. Leading the way were Bouchard and Emily Mooers who netted two goals each while single scores were made by Natalie Hill, Mia Hanning, Rebecca Mooers, Alexis Miller and Aspen Flewelling. In goal, Condon turned back four of five attempts.
Sammy Look scored her first career goal for 8-5 Calais.
Houlton girls 4, Schenck 0
Emily Mooers recorded a hat trick Oct. 9 at home in a 4-0 shutout against Schenck of East Millinocket. Houlton’s other goal was made by Bouchard, who also had a pair of assists. Madelene Anderson and Tyra Gentle also had assists in the win.
In goal, Condon claimed her sixth shutout on the season, stopping five of seven Wolverine shots. Houlton outshot Schenck 26-7.
Southern Aroostook girls 10, Woodland 0
The Warrior girls overpowered visiting Woodland, 10-0, Saturday with Kennedi Smith scoring three goals to help her team improve to 6-5-1 in Class D East. As of the latest standings, the Warrior girls were in seventh place among the 19-team field.
Also scoring goals for Southern Aroostook were Cassidy Lyons and Aimee Cottle with two apiece while Jess Nye, Dakota Mullens and Shanna Porter booted single goals.
SACS girls 2, East Grand 1
In another home game Oct. 9, Smith was the difference as she scored both Warrior goals in a narrow 2-1 victory. Kylie Dunphy assisted her on one of her tallies.
For East Grand, who is just one place back from the Warriors in the latest standings, Sarah Stoddard scored off a Kianna Caissie assist.
Hodgdon girls 6, SACS 4
The Lady Hawks picked up some tourney points Oct. 7 with a 6-4 home field win over Southern Aroostook. Pacing the winners with two goals each were Rachel Harmon, Jill Gough and Taylor Derosiers.
Hodgdon, 5-8-0 as of Oct. 14, appears to have secured a playoff spot in the postseason.
The Lady Warriors have two remaining regular season games; they travel to Woodland today and Friday at home against Class C Madawaska.
The 11th-seeded Hodgdon girls have one game left on Oct. 21 when they host third-seeded Easton.
East Grand girls 2, Limestone-MSSM 0
At Danforth Oct. 7, Stoddard scored both goals to lead the host to the shutout victory and avenge an early-season loss to the Eagles.
Goalie Chelsea Winiarski had her fifth shutout with 11 saves for East Grand. Peers made 12 saves for the Eagles.
East Grand was slated to host Highview Christian Academy yesterday before closing out the regular season Monday, Oct. 20 at home against Woodland.
Madawaska boys 1,
Houlton 1
Abe Lorom scored an unassisted goal with 20:33 remaining to tie the game Monday against the higher seeded Owls at Madawaska. The game would end in a 1-1 tie after two scoreless overtime periods.
Madawaska’a Lucas Gendreau netted his team’s goal off an assist from Ethan Wetmore.
In goal, Houlton’s A.J. Henderson turned away five of six shots while his counterpart at the other end, Greg Cyr stopped one of two shots faced.
The Owls had beaten the Shires, 2-0, back on Aug. 28 during both teams’ season opener.
In the latest Class C Heal Point Standings, Houlton, with a 3-7-2 record, was sitting in 10th place while Madawaska, at 6-3-2, held down the No. 6 spot.
Calais boys 2, Houlton 1
Down in Calais on Saturday, the Shiretowners outshot their opponents 23-19 but fell short by a 2-1 margin. Lorom scored Houlton’s only goal while Kyle Johnson and Andre Paul dented the net for the Blue Devils, who improved to 4-7-0 but trail the Shires in the latest standings.
Goalie Henderson had 13 saves while Calais’ stopper Matt Perkins had 19.
Houlton boys 0, Schenck 0
Last Tuesday at home, Houlton and Schenck battled to a scoreless tie. No further details were reported.
Coach Mike Carlos’ Shiretowners have two games remaining on their regular season schedule. Saturday they host the fifth-seeded Orono Red Riots and travel to Lincoln next Tuesday for a game with Mattanawcook, several places behind Houlton in the Oct. 14 standings.
Southern Aroostook boys 10, Woodland 0
The action was all on the visitor’s end as the hometown Warriors blanked Woodland Saturday, 10-0. Leading the way for sixth-seeded Southern Aroostook was Cameron Landry with a hat trick. Scoring single tallies for the winners were Jackson Mathers, Parker Walker, Tyler Batchelder, Matt Tarr, Nolan Altvater and Josiah Sherwood.
Mathers and Walker led their squad in the assist department with two while Batchelder and Tarr had one each. In goal, SACS’ Austin White made four saves.
The Warriors wrap up their season this week with a road game against Woodland today and at home Friday against the Class C Madawaska Owls.
SACS boys 4, East Grand 1
Southern Aroostook used three goals from Mathers Thursday to take a 4-1 home win against East Grand. He also had an assist.
Walker scored the other Warrior goal and assisted in two more while White and Altvater shared goalie responsibilities and three saves.
For the Vikings, who at 2-6-1 and placed 14th in the latest standings are hoping to secure a playoff game, Philip Farley scored the lone goal. EGHS goalie Tom Gilman was busy in net, turning back 33 shots.
Limestone boys 7,
East Grand 0
At Danforth, Zeb Keith-Hardy paced the Eagles to a 7-0 win with three first-half goals. Other Limestone-MSSM scorers included Gordon McCullough, Tobyn Blatt, Tommy Giggey and Ahmad Beshir.
For the Vikings, Gilman made 32 saves on 39 shots.
East Grand, who were slated to host Highview Christian yesterday, has one remaining game on their schedule at home against Woodland Friday.
Katahdin boys 1,
Central Aroostook 0
Brody Guiggey scored the lone goal of the match Friday to lead the Cougars to the victory in Mars Hill. The win helped Katahdin move up to 12th place in the latest EM Class D standings with a 3-10 record, two spots behind the Panthers, who held a 5-7 mark.
Penobscot Valley boys 4, Katahdin 1
Last Tuesday at Howland, the home team broke open the game late in the second half in their 4-1 win over Katahdin. For the second-seeded Howlers, who found themselves losing 1-0 just over a minute into the game, the scoring was balanced as Alex Thompson, Jonny Littlefield, Grant Doane and Thomas Spencer each found the mark.
Brody Guiggey scored the Cougars’ only goal, unassisted.
In the net, Katahdin’s Cody Brownlee saved 11 of 22 shots on goal.
The Cougars were slated to wrap up the regular season today at home against Schenck.
Penobscot Valley girls 5, Katahdin 0
The undefeated Howlers continued to dominate in Class D with a home win Thursday over Katahdin, 5-0. Leading the offense for PVHS was Logan Tozier with a pair of goals and an assist.
For Katahdin, who has yet to win a game, goalie Courtney Stevens had 17 saves on 25 shots.
