CARIBOU — TAMC will partner with AARP Maine for its October Community Lunch and Learn/Healthy Aging Luncheon set for Monday, Oct. 27 at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center. Informational displays and entertainment will begin at 10 a.m., with lunch and presentations by two speakers to follow at 11 a.m.
The first presenter, TAMC Surgical Podiatrist Dr. Jared Kohlbacher, will speak about health issues that impact the feet — both related conditions that affect foot health and those concerns that are unique to the feet and ankles. “Focus on the Foot” will include information on diabetes, specific to how it interacts with feet and nails; and cover other topics including foot deformities related to hammer toe, bunions and nails. Kohlbacher will also speak about other foot health issues such as plantar fasciitis and general foot pain.
“As we age there are changes that happen to our bodies from head to toe,” said Kohlbacher. “I will share with the seniors what they can expect from their feet as they age. I will also talk about what can be done to help maintain foot health and the best way to treat common foot ailments.”
Kohlbacher’s interactive presentation, which will conclude with a question and answer period, will be followed by AARP Maine State Director Dr. Lori Parham, who is traveling the state as part of AARP Maine’s Voter Engagement Tour. Parham will lead a non-partisan community conversation with attendees on issues of importance for Maine’s most active voting demographic, the week before Election Day.
“The 2014 AARP survey clearly demonstrates a deep concern regarding financial security, particularly for lower income individuals,” said Parham. “Many have no confidence of ever being able to retire and others report being extremely worried about having health or medical expenses they cannot afford. Mainers will be counting on leadership in both Augusta and in Washington to address these very prevalent concerns.”
AARP staff and volunteers will be distributing state-specific Voters’ Guides for the Gubernatorial and Congressional races which highlight the candidates’ position on select issues related to health and financial security.
This month’s program at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center will also feature music by the Wagoneers beginning at 10 a.m.
