• Potatoes 85 and 90 cents per barrel today.
• It seems too bad over half the prisoners placed in the lockup for being drunk, when brought up for trial are in a worse state of intoxication than when locked up.
100 Years Ago-Oct. 22, 1914
• Aroostook ships 800 cars of potatoes — Nearly 800 cars of Aroostook potatoes passed Sunday in different yards of the railroads in Portland. All now bear inspection tags certifying they come from regions that are free from powdery scab and they are believed to be free from infection.
• Washburn rebuilds after fire — Fred J. Dionne, one of Caribou’s husting young businessmen, has begun erection of a business block in Washburn on the site of the recent fire. The structure will house two large stores, one to be occupied by Scates & Co. druggists and the other by Guy Durepo furniture. The basement will be occupied by Dionne who will conduct a pool room, lunch counter and bowling alley.
75 Years Ago-Oct. 26, 1939
• Merchants honor Armistice Day — Caribou merchants, in observance of Armistice Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, will close their places of business during the entire day. A number will remain open both Thursday and Friday evenings preceding the holiday.
• Blackstone Dairy touts new silage — F. J. Blackstone & Sons have recently started feeding their grass silage mixed with second crop clover mixed with molasses, believed to be the first of this type ever used in Caribou. Members of Blackstone Dairy have extended an invitation to farmers interested in viewing the new project to visit their farm.
50 Years Ago-Oct. 22, 1964
• Harlem Globetrotters in town — Ken Allen, manager of Hotel Caribou, reported today that the Harlem Globetrotters will headquarter in the local hotel for three days when they are in the area late this month. On Saturday night, Oct. 31, the Globetrotters will play the New York Nationals at the Caribou Armory.
• Staples Sewing Service expands — Expanding with the community of Caribou, Staples Sewing Service moved into its new quarters on the Presque Isle Road this week. Kermit Staples, owner of this rapidly growing business, worked with the late Fred Levesque and purchased the business in 1962. They handle many lines of machines including Remington, Brother, Necchi, Elna, Phaff and Stradivaro.
25 Years Ago-Oct. 25, 1989
• Dave Mallett performs in Caribou — David Mallett, who will perform at the Caribou Performing Arts Center this Friday, describes his music as “country fringe with a real focus on lyrics.” His “Garden Song” has been recorded by a number of artists including John Denver. Born in Dover-Foxcroft, Mallett began his career with help from Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary.
• ‘Pumpkin Planet’ at Malcolm Science Center — The Francis Malcolm Science Center will hold a Halloween party, Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 5-8 p.m. where participants will visit “Pumpkin Planet” with Mr. B in the planetarium.
