VASSALBORO, Maine — Katie Pelletier finished her varsity golf career in solid fashion Saturday.
The Caribou High School senior, competing in the individual state championship for the fourth consecutive year, shot an 87 to place 11th out of 50 female competitors at Natanis Golf Course. The girls’ champion was Hashilla Rivai of Thornton Academy in Saco, who shot a blistering 70.
“It was a great exit for her,” said her coach, Shawn Savage, noting it was Pelletier’s lowest score in her four years of competing in the event.
Jenna Hallett of Presque Isle tied Bailey Plourde of Lincoln Academy for second with a 75. The two were co-champions in last year’s event.
Three of Pelletier’s Viking teammates participated in the boys’ tourney after having qualified at the PVC championships/regional qualifier held at Jato Highlands in Lincoln Oct. 2.
Junior Donovan Savage shot an 87 to place 16th out of 36 in Class B, while his older brother Dayne was one stroke back with an 88, tying him for 18th in the final high school match of his career. Tyler Dombroski, a junior, came in with a 102.
“Dayne and Donovan both shot respectable scores, but higher than what they had hoped,” said their father and coach. “They both shot 81 the week before and had targeted breaking 80 but as they say, they just never got it going like they hoped they would. Tyler shot his score despite taking 10s on two separate holes, but it was a great experience for him nonetheless.”
In Class C, Fort Fairfield’s Robbie Watson was unable to defend his state title from a year ago, but he still finished tied for third by carding a 76. He was four strokes behind winner Logan Thompson of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln.
