More training for Houlton Guardsmen — For the second time in less than three months, the Houlton National Guard will take to the road for another week of field training. The men spent three weeks in August attending First Army maneuvers at Plattsburg, N. Y. The current maneuvers are to be executed in Maine, around Bangor.

Hands: A family of pilots — When Mrs. Linwood Hand soloed in the new single-engine aircraft of the Houlton Flying Club last week, she became the fourth member of the family to take on wings. Her husband, who is Aroostook County judge of probate, flew his solo flight in 1963, barely a few weeks ahead of son, Ward, who was only 16 at the time. Nineteen-year-old Dottie Hand soloed a month ago, just prior to leaving for her senior year at the University of Vermont.
Monticello Grange hosts Sen. Muskie — Senator Edmund S. Muskie and Democratic candidates for County offices were guests Friday at a noon luncheon at the (Monticello) Grange Hall. Mrs. Michael Brown was chairman, assisted by Mrs. Jack Grass, Mrs. Maurice Hanning, Mrs. Chester Nickerson, Mrs. Glenn Manuel, Mrs. Walter Day, Mrs. Burlock, Mrs. Kermit Esty and Mrs. Everett Lenentine.

Island Falls forest rangers complete training — Island Falls Forest Rangers Dana Beals and Mark Berube and Gary Sweetser, assistant regional forest ranger, are among 50 state forest and park rangers and park managers who have completed the Conservation Officer Law Enforcement Academy in Waterville, a course designed jointly by the Department of Conservation and the Criminal Justice Academy.
Northern Katahdin Valley organizes chamber — The Northern Katahdin Valley Chamber of Commerce is making its presence known in the area. According to President Betty Smallwood, NKVRCC was organized in June and has 15 members and serves 17 communities: Sherman Mills, Stacyville, Monarda/Silver Ridge, Benedicta, Oakfield, Dyer Brook, Smyrna Mills, Crystal/Golden Ridge, Island Falls, Patten, Merrill, Mr. Chase/Shin Pond, Hersey, Oxbow, T5R8/Bowlin Pond, T6R8/Mattagamon, and T7R5 Moro Plt.
