Halloween Tips
With Halloween just a week away, parents need to start thinking about their child’s safety, as well as the other children who will be out on the streets this festive night. Please sit down with your child and go over these few safety tips, as well as any others that you can think of.
Remember: If you need us, we will come! Call the Houlton PD at (207) 532-2287, the Maine State Police at (207) 532-5400, or the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office at (207) 532-3471, and for all emergency calls dial 9-1-1.
1. Try to trick-or-treat when it is still light out.
2. Wear a costume that makes it easier for you to walk, see, and be seen.
3. If you must go at night, make sure that your costume is light in color.
4. Carry a flashlight with you so you can see and be seen easily.
5. Use retro-reflective tape on your costume to be seen easily.
6. Use makeup instead of a mask.
7. If someone older cannot go with you, trick-or-treat in a group.
8. Cross only at corners. Never cross between parked vehicles.
9. Tell your family which streets you will be trick-or-treating.
10. If there are no sidewalks, always walk facing traffic.
11. And, parents, check the treats to ensure they are safe to eat.
Having our children safe starts at home. Please take an active part in all they do.
Reminders
The HPD wishes to remind Houlton citizens, and those who park in Houlton, that the all-night parking ban will go into effect on Nov. 1 and will remain in effect until March 31, 2015, for all streets in Houlton.
The General Ordinance of the Town of Houlton (Section 14-520) reads: “No person shall park a vehicle [during the overnight hours] on any street in Houlton during the period beginning Nov. 1 and ending March 31.”
