On Saturday, Nov. 15, the Island Falls VFW Post No. 7529 held its monthly supper at the post home, and this also included the VFW annual turkey raffle. The supper, cooked by chef Grey Hawk with assistance from Mariette and Kathy, was served at 5 p.m. and the turkey raffle followed. Many attended this event and there was great fun during the raffle with many turkeys won by folks to be enjoyed over Thanksgiving.
I had a recent phone call from son, Tom, who lives in Bangor, and he informed me that the power has finally been restored to his area following the recent bad storm that hit the Bangor area. Fortunately, he had a generator that kept his house warm during the blackout, but he had a lot of snow plowing to do after the storm let up. I also got a note from the Delongs, who now reside in Brooksville, Fla., and they have had a bit of coolish weather down there, but as former northerners, they lived through it.
I have not been lucky enough lately to see another glimpse of the beautiful male cardinal I had seen about a week ago, but still have lots of the little chickadees, about three blue jays, an occasional junco one or two woodpeckers and all of them sure do enjoy the peanut butter and lard mixture I trot out with two or three times a day—they eat it up so fast it doesn’t stay long on the branches of the cedar tree.
I did see a couple of grosbeaks the other day but they haven’t come back. Deer are still coming to the back lawn to graze, now that the snow has disappeared. Usually there are three of them, but one day four more showed up (and they were allowed to stay and graze) and it looked a real herd of them out there. I am still throwing out cut-up apples and old bread at dusk and come morning they have eaten it all.
I am still swimming at Vacationland and have recently seen a couple of friends from Patten there who hadn’t been seen during the summer. Also friends from Sherman show up occasionally, so there is usually a good group of us there. I am still hoping to see John White, from Smyrna, to return and join us.
