Girl Scouts celebrate a new year with ceremony
Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 1133 marked its seventh year together with its annual rededication ceremony that was held on Veterans Day at the Mapleton United Baptist Church. The ceremony began with introductions by Co-Leader Jennifer Buzza, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the Girl Scout Promise.
The program chosen for this year’s ceremony focused on what is known to Girl Scouting as “Founders Day,” which was celebrated Oct. 31. This day also marked the birth of the founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low. Low believed that by taking an oath, girls would better understand their place in the community and would join forces with thousands of other girls who shared a common belief and commitment.
Each girl took part in the “Pearls and Wishes” ceremony, led by Co-Leader Laurie Amero, by sharing a reading about Low and the history of Girl Scouting. The title of the ceremony comes from the fact that Low decided to sell her precious pearl necklace that her husband had given her as a wedding gift in order to help keep her Girl Scout troop running. A true testament to her dedication and devotion, Girl Scouting is now in its 102nd year.
During the program, each girl shared a reading, then read her own individual wish, extinguished a candle and received a pearl necklace from Co-Leader Nancy Winslow. Following the program, the girls and leaders joined together in a friendship circle, which in Scouting represents the unbroken chain of friendship among Girl Scouts and Girl Guides all over the world.
Each girl was then presented with individual awards earned since the troop began its new year in September. The girls received patches for taking part in spring registration and the rededication ceremony, and many also earned their Cadette first aid badge. All the girls had already received their patch for attending a babysitting course, and each were recognized for the patches and awards earned during the fall product sale. The ceremony concluded with the girls singing the full lyrics to the popular Girl Scout song, “Make New Friends.”
Members of Troop 1133 include second-year Cadette Katelyn Amero and first year Cadettes Delaney Alward, Bethany Baker, Madelyn Buzza, Alexis Getchell, Sydney Robichaud and Amanda Winslow.
