100 Years Ago-Nov. 25, 1914

November weddings — The marriage of Miss Mary Cassidy and Stanley Berry, both well-known young people of Houlton, took place on Tuesday last, Rev. P. M. Silke of St. Mary’s officiating. A very pretty wedding took place at the home of Mrs. G. A. M. Carpenter, 20 Park St., Wednesday morning when Mr. Guy J. D. Wilson of Mars Hill was married to Miss Etta F. Stewart, Houlton.

News from Littleton — Special Revival services will be held at the Logan schoolhouse on the Ridge. A large crowd of young people from Monticello and Littleton enjoyed Thursday evening skating on Gentle Lake. Mr. Fred Little is quite ill with typhoid fever.

Export of Allied planes — Speculation on the possibility of the Houlton airport being selected as the U.S. port for the delivery of American-made airplanes designed for Canada and Great Britain was heightened this morning with the arrival of E. Fletcher Ingalls, engineer connected with the Civil Aeronautics Authority.

BS-FromFiles-dc-pt-47HOULTON COUPLE REELECTED — Mr. and Mrs. Harley M. Stewart were reelected to the Maine State Grange offices of Lecturer and Ceres, for another two-year term during the state convention.

River rescue of Island Falls boy — Herman Freeman doubtless owes his life to Victor Willette who rescued him Sunday from the current of the Mattawamkeag river near the mill bridge after Freeman, with other boys, was skating on the first substantial ice of the season. Willette led the boys in forming a chain where he pulled young Freeman to solid ice.

Community chorus completes first year — Regular weekly rehearsals are now in progress for the Christmas concert to be presented by the Houlton Community Chorus Dec. 6. This will be the third presentation by this group since its organization in October 1963 under director Paul Paige.
Sylvester completes Navy duty — Torrey Sylvester and his wife, Jennifer, have returned to Houlton following a two-year tour with the U.S. Navy at Sasebo, Japan. Lt. Sylvester was executive officer aboard the minesweeper “Woodpecker” when he obtained his release from the Navy after five years of active duty. He also served on the destroyer Conway and participated in both Cuban crises.

Cheerleading is varsity sport — Cheerleading at Houlton High School has been designated as a varsity sport. According to Maryann Sylvain, coach of squad one varsity cheerleaders, the girls are athletes, learning different skills incorporating dances, gymnastics and some tumbling.
Border Patrol Station holds open house — The Chief Patrol Agent, U.S. Border Patrol Sector Headquarters, Houlton, cordially invites the public to attend an open house at the new Houlton Border Patrol Station, on Nov. 28, 1989.
