Record cold temperatures are sweeping large parts of the country, and many animals will suffer as a result. It is a crime — and a felony in some areas — to leave a pet outdoors in extreme weather. Please remember to bring your pets indoors. If you see an animal left out in the cold, we encourage you to contact local law enforcement agencies or your local animal control officer.

Pets left outside in extreme temperatures, especially without food and shelter, are at risk of hypothermia, frostbite and even death. Their owners also are at risk of facing criminal charges.
If you see a pet left out in the cold, please speak out. Humanesociety.org reports that this is one of the most common forms of animal cruelty, investigated more by police and animal control agencies than any other form of animal abuse. Our most constant companions — dogs and cats — feel the effects of winter weather as much as we do, only they are often cast outside to weather the cold or a storm owing to a misconception that the fur on their backs will insulate them from suffering. Without proper shelter, food and water, these domesticated animals’ chances of survival in frigid temperatures is greatly decreased.
Probably the best prescription for winter’s woes is to keep your dog or cat inside with you and your family. The happiest dogs are those who are taken out frequently for walks and exercise but kept inside the rest of the time. Dogs and cats are social animals who crave human companionship. Your animal companions deserve to live indoors with you and your family.

Toast for the Animals

We are just a few days away from our biggest fundraiser of the year! Our Toast for the Animals will be Friday, Nov. 21, from 6-9 p.m. at the Northeastland Hotel in Presque Isle. This is a wine- and beer-tasting event, with close to 100 silent auction items, a 50/50 raffle, door prizes, food, music and more! We have also been receiving your CAHS success stories to include you and your pet’s photo in our slide show during the evening. Send to cahs.success.stories@gmail.com and share your pet’s happy-ending story!
We are so very grateful for the many businesses and individuals who have become sponsors and also donated to our auction. We have a huge variety of items this year (and yes, we remembered to have more “guy things”).  Tickets are $15 at the door and you must be 21 to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Central Aroostook Humane Society or The Northeastland Hotel. We hope that you will come out and enjoy a wonderful evening of socializing and good cheer for a great cause!
Check out what pets are up for adoption at the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We are open Tuesday through Saturday, 1 a.m. to 4 p.m., closing for lunch noon to 12:30 p.m. You can also find us on petfinders.com and Facebook. Remember to be responsible pet owners, spay and neuter your pets.
