PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Spectators may want to make alternate parking arrangements to take in the 25th annual Holiday Light Parade, following organizers’ decision to change the direction entrants will travel on Saturday, Dec. 6.
“The start of the parade is now beginning at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and ending at the North Street Health Center parking lot,” said Lyn Frederick, executive assistant at the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce, host of the event. This year’s sponsor is Emera Maine.
The change was made, in part, to address concerns over traffic congestion and safety. “This change was made due to safety concerns of lining up on North Street,” noted Frederick.
“The parade starts at 6 p.m. We encourage everyone to come enjoy the festivities, bundle up and watch the brightest parade of the year,” said Frederick.
Hot chocolate and refreshments will be served at UMPI’s Gentile Hall and the Presque Isle Rec Center.
Frederick noted this is a family event, “so please, no smoking.”
Lineup begins at 4:30 p.m. at the university.
“The Chamber will uphold the tradition and have the only Santa Claus on their float. Please note, any extra Santas or candy throwing will disqualify your entry,” said Frederick.
Candy may be given out by walkers. Categories for judging include: Parade Champion, Best Business, Best Non-Profit, Best Faith Based and Best General Float.
“Please display a sign that clearly and boldly states the name of your business, organization or club on the left side of your float. Judging will take place as you pass the reviewing stand on Main St. Trophies will be presented at the finish of the parade in the North Street Health Center parking lot,” said Frederick.
Frederick said participants are encouraged to add music to their floats for more festive fun.
“We also ask that participants turn off their headlights during the parade,” she said.
“Catholic Charities of Maine will once again be collecting food along the parade route, so remember to bring a nonperishable food item if you can,” said Frederick.
It’s not necessary to have entries completely planned before registering with the Chamber.
“Just inform us of your decision to enter so we may compile the lineup,” said Frederick.
The Chamber is currently in need of an electrical generator.
“We need a small generator for use by us at the parade for the reviewing stand. If anyone can help with this, email me or call our office,” said Frederick.
Registration can be done at the Chamber office, 3 Houlton Rd. or by visiting www.centralaroostookchamber.com.
