HOULTON — The Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre will be holding registration and auditions for its production of “Thwacked!” on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at the Court Street Baptist Church in Houlton from 3 to 5 p.m. The play will be presented to the public on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11, at the Houlton Community Arts Center.
“Thwacked!” is a musical comedy by Dave and Jean Perry, published by Shawnee Press. It is full of interesting characters trying to unravel the mystery of a talking frog and a falling sky, and includes songs that are varied in style, upbeat, and fun to sing and dance. The cast will be involved in creating choreography and props, as well as bringing the story to life on stage. The play will be co-directed by Mary Miller and Ann Barnes.
Auditions are open to all students in grades 3 through 5, as well as second-graders who were in last year’s Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre production. Great singing and dancing skills are not required for having a role in the show. Auditions for another production for students in sixth grade and older will be announced at a later date. Older students who are interested in being involved with the technical aspects of “Thwacked!” (e.g. lighting, sound, set design/construction, props, etc.) should also attend this registration event. Parents dropping children off for auditions are asked to come inside first to fill out a registration form.
Rehearsals for “Thwacked” will begin in January 2015 and continue until the performance dates in early April. All children will be required to attend all final rehearsals during the week of the performance. There will be no rehearsals during the school vacation weeks. The final week’s rehearsals will take place at the Houlton Community Arts Center at Houlton High School. Other rehearsals will be primarily at the Court Street Baptist Church in Houlton.
The Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre, founded in 1969 by students at Ricker College, is one of the oldest community children’s theatres in the country and offers live theater FOR and BY children to the Greater Houlton area. The Theatre is a non-profit organization supported by generous volunteer help and community donations.
