MATTER OF BALANCE PARTICIPANTS — Gathering for a photo were participants of the Matter of Balance class recently held in Oakfield. Seated from left: Arlene Friel, Sherrie LeBlanc and Elaine Barrett. Standing: Florence Grant, Betty Marley and Sandra Wyman. Absent from photo were Helen Blois and Lewis “Mike” Swallow.
The eight-week program, a one day per week, two-hour class, addresses the topics of fear of falling which can actually contribute to falls, fun exercises which can help prevent falls, assertiveness in talking to your doctor and fall hazards in the home and community. Each participant learns something that benefits him or her besides the fun and socialization enjoyed. The class builds confidence and friendships.
During the program, Arlene Friel was surprised with a birthday cake for her 90th birthday. Also, on Oct. 31, someone was seen coming up the walk who we didn’t recognize— a clown — Sandy Wyman! Of all days not to have a camera. Elaine (Tessy) Barrett was presented with a certificate and candle for her volunteering. Class instructor Bonnie Pratt said, “I don’t know what I would do without Tessy. She calls me in the morning for a time check, helps me set up, does roleplays with me in class, and helps pack up. She is my right arm and helps me remember everything!”
According to Pratt, the next class to be coordinated for this area will be a spring class, possibly getting together once a month, January to March, to help each other through the winter months. “Our goal is to start small and build up. Spring will see us improved. I already have four on my list for spring and will keep the class to eight in a group.”
