On Saturday, December 6, the Island Falls Historical Society will be holding their annual Christmas cookie sale at the Tingley house from 9-1 p.m. There will be a great variety of cookies again this year and they will be sold at $5 per box. I, for one, am looking forward to this sale as cookies go great with hot tea and also with milk.
Had a call from my sister who lives in Bow, N.H., and she informed me that due to a power outage the night before Thanksgiving, the power in Bow was not restored in time for all her family to come for Thanksgiving dinner. Instead, all went to Concord to her niece’s home, where the power was not out. There they cooked the huge turkey and enjoyed a family dinner with all the trimmings.
Son Tom, in Bangor, spent Thanksgiving Day plowing out his dooryard, and had his dinner later in the day after the snow had stopped falling. I went nowhere but did throw out the apples and old bread for the deer before the storm started and the next day there were plenty of deer prints all over my front lawns, which showed that they had found the food even though it was covered by snow.
After being plowed out I went out and filled the bird feeders and the birds were flocking around and having a great time eating the peanut butter and lard mixture I give them. They really like the stuff and it doesn’t take long for them to clean it all off the tree limbs. Had the good fortune to see a female cardinal in my feeder on Thanksgiving Day. She stayed quite awhile and even got into one of the feeders, where she stayed awhile and ate the seeds. The blue jays and woodpeckers sure make short work of the peanut butter mixture and the little birds have to wait practically in line to get some of it.
Had a young deer come up to the front lawn the day after Thanksgiving so threw out some bread for her before she got to the lawn, then watched her when she ate it all —then something spooked her and she took off with great leaps for the woods nearby.
