War tax stamps required — Many Houlton people including druggists, tobacco dealers, shippers of freight, real estate dealers, insurance men and others, were required by law to make use of internal revenue (war) tax stamps, but the stamps were not to be had.
Houlton trial attracts attention — Lillian Whiting, the well-known authoress and journalist who is a special writer on the Boston American, was in town last week getting material for a special article on the Sullivan case. The trial of Dr. Lionel E. Dudley, charged with causing the death of Mildred Sullivan, commenced Saturday morning in Houlton.

Island Falls opens library — The Katahdin Public Library, which has been established by the Katahdin Club of Island Falls, was opened to the public November 27th. The room in use is the concrete building owned by the town on Burleigh street. Mrs. Bessie McLeod is the librarian.
4-H Christmas project — Christmas cards are being made by 4-H club boys and girls with the Aroostook Hustlers of Benedicta, led by Miss Christina Qualey, planning a meeting on making blue print cards, made from a negative of a snapshot by using blue print paper.

Easy pickin’s — A rash of stolen automobiles over the weekend has prompted Police Chief Arthur C. Libby to again remind motorists to remove the ignition keys when they get out of their cars. Chief Libby said all three stolen vehicles, with keys left in the ignition, were recovered.

MAN OF THE HOUR — The auditorium of the Gentle Memorial Building was jammed with youngsters for a special party in honor of the arrival of Santa Claus to the Shiretown. As a buildup to the main attraction, Mrs. Lenonn Flanders put on a puppet show.
In the military — Marine Private William L. Gormley of Houlton completed four weeks of individual combat training Nov. 4 at Camp Lejuene, N.C. Army Specialist Four Neil R. Kinney and other members of the 7th Infantry Division participated in training exercises in Korea. Staff Sergeant Kenneth L. Callnan of Houlton has been selected Outstanding Noncommissioned Officer of the quarter in his Air Defense Command group at Perrin AFB, Texas.
