FORT FAIRFIELD — Dr. Donald W. Cassidy Sr., D.M.D., 80, husband of the late Elizabeth L. (McCarthy) Cassidy, passed away Tuesday morning, November 25, 2014 at a Presque Isle nursing facility, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 11, 1934 in Fort Fairfield, the son of Wilfred F. and Loretta (Allison) Cassidy.
Donald was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, class of 1952 and completed his undergraduate studies at St. Anselms College, Manchester, NH, where he was president of his senior class. He received his Doctorate of Medical Dentistry from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, and served in the United States Navy as a dentist from 1960 to 1962.
Donald was a lifelong communicant of the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield, was married to Elizabeth L. McCarthy on July 2, 1960 and established Cassidy Professional Associates in Fort Fairfield, providing dental services to Aroostook County from 1962 to 2000. Dr. Cassidy was a member of the Maine Dental Association, a member and past president of the Aroostook County Dental Society, a member of the American Dental Association, and a member and past president of the Aroostook Valley Country Club, Fort Fairfield. Donald also loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting and was always willing to graciously contribute to his church and community in numerous capacities over the years.
In addition to his parents, Donald was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth on July 29, 1992. He is survived by two sons, Dr. Donald W. Cassidy Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, of Presque Isle, Joseph P. Cassidy and his wife, Heather, of Fort Fairfield; one daughter, Elizabeth “Bethany” M. Paterson and her husband, Curt, of Presque Isle; two brothers, James Cassidy and his wife, Marion, of Fort Fairfield, Eugene Cassidy and his wife, Linda, of Sinclair; four sisters, Marion Fritz of Tampa, FL, Georgine Richards and Ellen Corrow and her husband, Greg, all of Caribou, Caroline Daigle and her husband, Dennis, of Littleton, NH; eight grandchildren, Bennett Cassidy of Portland, Brock Cassidy of Presque Isle, Collin, Dalton and Ethan Cassidy, all of Fort Fairfield, Andrew, Adam and Cole Paterson, all of Presque Isle; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends called Friday November 28, 2014 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday November 29, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield with Fr. Jean-Paul Labrie celebrant. Military funeral honors took place at the church following the Mass. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments was held after the service at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post Number 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield. Private interment took place at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Those who wish may contribute in memory of Dr. Cassidy to the Fort Fairfield Alumni Association, P.O.
