Van Buren man charged with multiple thefts

A Van Buren man is facing multiple charges in connection with a string of thefts reported in at least seven communities, stretching from New Canada to Washburn.

“On Friday, Nov. 26, Trooper Corey Hafford charged Dennis Winchester,  50, of Van Buren, with five counts of Class B burglary, eight counts of Class C theft, seven counts of Class E criminal mischief and violation of condition of release, also a Class E offense. This was following the execution of multiple search warrants and interviews of victims of crimes dating back to Dec. 3, 2013,” said Sgt. Chad Fuller, of the Maine State Police.
Fuller said on Tuesday, Nov. 9, troopers assisted the Van Buren Police Department in executing a search warrant at 188 Castonguay Rd. in Van Buren, Winchester’s residence.
“As a result of the search warrant, stolen items were located and seized. Troopers Hafford, Michaud and Levesque — along with officers from the Van Buren Police Department — worked together to locate the owners of the stolen property, including using social media,” said Fuller.
Fuller said the crimes were committed in the towns of: Washburn, New Canada, New Sweden, Caswell, Stockholm, Perham and Cyr Plantation.
Winchester is currently in the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton. He’s scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Caribou on Dec. 18, 2014.
