Girls hoops: East Grand undefeated in first two games

The East Grand girls under Mike Carlos have opened the season 2-0 with another win this week against Machias. The Lady Vikings opened the season with a 54-42 victory over Woodland.
Last Saturday in Machias, the East Grand girls earned a nail-biting 49-47 win.

Haleigh Shay tossed in 15 points, as the Lady Vikings overcame a five-point halftime deficit, 13-18.
Kim Stoddard knocked down 11 points while Sarah Stoddard and Allie McEwen each chipped in with nine points for East Grand.
Tate Dolley netted a game-high 28 points for Machias.
The Houlton Lady Shires even their season record at 1-1 after a blowout over Fort Kent, 81-19, last Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium. Coach Shawn Graham was able to use each player in the game to gain valuable playing time.
Freshman Kolleen Bouchard led all scorers with 31 points, while hauling down seven rebounds. Rylee Warman tossed in 14 points, while Natalie Hill and Aspen Flewelling each dropped in 10 points. Makayla Watson added seven points and eight rebounds, as well.
Last Tuesday at home, the Lady Shires turned in a strong second quarter, but went away in the second half, as Presque Isle took a 59-47 victory. The Wildcats fired in six 3-pointers to open the game for a 20-7 lead, but the Lady Shires picked up their defensive intensity and outscored Presque Isle, 20-12, to cut the lead to 32-27 at intermission.
Emily Langerstrom paced Presque Isle with 18 points, including six 3-pointers. Krystal Kingsbury chipped in with 15 points, while Hannah Graham added 11 points and Taylor Williams netted eight.
Katie Condon recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Houlton, while Bouchard posted 12 points and seven rebounds and Warman added 11 points.
The Katahdin Lady Cougars are 3-1 after grabbing two wins this week. The Katahdin girls topped host Ashland, 66-23, Monday night, as Courtney Stevens led the way with 23 points, five assists and four steals. Molly Cunningham posted 14 points, 12 defensive rebounds, seven offensive rebounds and five assists, while Georgia Landry had 14 points, seven assists and eight steals and Natalie Rickards added 10 points.
Last Saturday, the Katahdin girls overtook visiting Bangor Christian, 41-34 in a makeup game.
Stevens again paced Katahdin’s offense with 15 points, followed by Landry with 12 points and five assists.
Last Thursday, the Lady Cougars were defeated 50-34 by host Penobscot Valley. Howland’s Sami Ireland connected for 14 of her 22 points in the second half to lead her team to victory.
For Katahdin, Stevens had 10 points and Cunningham chipped in with seven.
The Hodgdon girls continue to look for a win, as they lost to host Madawaska, 41-24, on Saturday. Hannah Sherman led the Lady Hawks with 11 points.
The Owls opened the game with a 7-3 lead, extending it to an 18-8 halftime cushion. After three, the Owls held a 34-15 lead en route to the win.
The Southern Aroostook girls are in the same boat as Hodgdon, as they look to pick up their first win of the year.
The Lady Warriors were overpowered, 75-25, last Friday in Fort Fairfield. The Southern Aroostook girls are 0-2.
The Lady Tigers snatched a 28-3 first-quarter lead and staked a 50-22 halftime lead. The Lady Tigers held Southern Aroostook scoreless in the third cruising to the win. The Fort Fairfield girls held SACS scoreless in the third
Kennedi Smith scored all 13 of her points in the second quarter, including three 3-pointers for Southern Aroostook.
