Alvin Weinberg

     WEINBERG, Alvin, 90, PRESQUE ISLE, December 15, 2014. On Saturday, December 27, from 1-5 p.m., there will be a memorial held at the Northeastland Hotel. Arrangements are under the care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle. 

    PRESQUE ISLE – Alvin Weinberg peacefully passed away on December 15, 2014, with his family at his side and the very caring staff of the Aroostook Medical Center. He was 90 years old. He was married to his beloved wife, Sylvia, for 64 years and survived by a son and daughter.
    Al was an only child and extremely devoted to his parents. He was an eagle scout who traveled to Washington to meet President Franklin Roosevelt. He was a WW II veteran who served in China.
    Al owned and managed a clothing store in Presque Isle for over 60 years with his father, Hymie, and his son, Jay. He built the business based on true customer service, genuine caring for patrons and as Al would like to say, “fabulous selections.” One of the cornerstones of the business was providing credit with no interest. Al was extremely proud to say in over 60 years “no one ever signed their name in his store.”
    He literally clothed generations of families in Aroostook County. One of his favorite stories describes a gentleman who ran into the store stating he was getting married that day and needed a suit. Al had one suit that could possibly fit. He brought it to the tailor, Joe Olore for alterations, and a few hours later the man was off to get married.
    Al was well known around Aroostook County for his television commercials. He presented the familiar greeting with his unique voice of “Hi folks, this is Al Weinberg …” The voice was so distinctive that the county fair had an Al Weinberg sound alike contest.
    Al was a fantastic cook known by one of his friends as the “pie guy.” Al was an avid golfer. He acknowledged not being one of the best, but those times with his friends were some of his most enjoyable. Al had a passion for football. It was not unusual for him to switch among channels, accompanied by exclamations that, well, can’t be mentioned in this writing. Another favorite activity that was almost never missed was drinking coffee with “the boys” at the Northeastland. Al had a great sense of humor. He could bring a joke alive like no one else.
    Al Weinberg was a true gentleman and treated everyone he met with the utmost respect. He was a class act, and as the old saying goes, they broke the mold when they made him.
