Island Falls News

On Saturday, Dec. 20, Marion Hoar, myself, and John Stevens and friend, Barbara Pelletier, were volunteers at the Upper Room in Sherman from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Business was very brisk during the morning, but slowed down considerably after lunch.

Lots of Christmas articles were sold for decorating during the holidays plus lots of warm clothes to be worn during the winter. The Island Falls Historical Society had a very successful cookie sale, which was held on Dec. 6 and a great many of the cookies were sold and, no doubt, enjoyed by the many who attended the sale. Heard recently from my sister, who lives in Concord, N.H. and they have been enjoying wonderful warm weather there (up in the forties) and what snow they had is now a muddy mess.
Here we are all looking at three foot snow banks and lots of snow in the dooryards. On checking on my feathered friends I still have the faithful chickadees, nuthatches, juncos and the other day, a rose breasted grosbeak, plus the ever present woodpeckers and an occasional blue jay. The big gray squirrel arrives about noon to hang upside down from the tree limb so he can get at the seeds in the birdfeeder.
I think he scares away the one lone red squirrel that I have seen lately, as that one doesn’t arrive until the middle of the afternoon. And they all sure like the peanut-butter and lard mixture I put on the tree limbs and they can hardly wait until I finish putting it out before they are there eating it as fast as they can so I have to make sure there is plenty for the little birds to have, too. The chickadees and nuthatches like the mixture as well as the squirrels. And every late afternoon, just before dusk, I have to put out the bread and cut-up apples for the four deer that arrive for their lunch, which is put on my front lawn and also on the lawn outside my kitchen door. Have told my neighbors to keep an eye out at that time so they can enjoy watching them, too.
Merry Christmas to all!
