Bird count set Jan. 3
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — On Saturday, Jan. 3, area birders will continue a long-standing holiday tradition — the Presque Isle Audubon Christmas Bird Count.
Started in 1933 by high school biology teacher Glen Chamberlain, this year’s count covers much the same territory as Chamberlain’s original tally did over 80 years ago: a seven and a half-mile radius within downtown Presque Isle. Aroostook Birders bird-watching club is hosting the 2014 count.
Count rules are simple. Field volunteers cover assigned areas and count all wild birds seen, with feeder watchers recording birds visiting home feeders in the 24-hour period. At the end of the day, counters meet up, compare notes and compile a master list. To participate, contact Bill Sheehan at Bill.j.Sheehan@gmail.com or call 227-7301.
