Beaver squads unbeaten so far
The Washburn Beavers are undefeated and at the top in both the girls’ and boys’ Class D Heal Point standings. The squads were both victorious in their only contests last week, with the girls beating Southern Aroostook and the boys downing Van Buren.
The Washburn girls were 5-0 entering last night’s game against Central Aroostook in Mars Hill. They host Washburn Friday and are at Ashland Saturday, with a huge game looming next Tuesday against Fort Fairfield, which is also undefeated at 4-0 and in seventh position.
The Beaver boys face a quiet week with just one game scheduled — home against Wisdom Friday.
The Easton girls snapped a three-game losing streak by stopping Wisdom at home Monday. The team, coached by Bryan Shaw, was 4-3 and in fifth place going into last night’s home matchup against Madawaska.
The Fort Fairfield Tigers eased past Central Aroostook in boys’ action Saturday to improve to 5-1 overall. Fort is in third place, behind only Washburn and Schenck of East Millinocket.
Easton garnered a victory over Wisdom Monday at home and lifted its mark to 4-2. The Bears are currently sixth in the division.
The Presque Isle Wildcat boys’ struggles continued as they fell to Hermon last Tuesday and Ellsworth Monday despite holding healthy first-half leads in both games. PI was 15th in Eastern Maine Class B with its 1-5 record entering yesterday afternoon’s home game against Mount Desert Island.
Summaries of games played through Monday, Dec. 29 are as follows:
Presque Isle girls 68, Ellsworth 40 — Hannah Graham netted 18 points, including five three-pointers, and Krystal Kingsbury added 17 points to lead the Wildcats to another easy victory at home Monday.
Emily Wheaton netted nine points for PI, which built a 20-point lead at the end of the first quarter to set the tone.
Maddie Card scored 13 points to lead the Eagles and Samantha Mason chipped in 12 points.
Easton girls 50, Wisdom 26 — After being held scoreless in the first quarter and facing a 10-point deficit at halftime, the Bears came from behind to win easily over the visiting Pioneers Monday.
Elise Allen led Easton with 12 points and Kalie Ward added 11 and Kylee Carter nine.
Rylee Wright paced Wisdom with 10 points.
Easton boys 69, Wisdom 30 — The Bears used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Wisdom Pioneers at home Monday.
Leading the offense for Easton was Logan Halvorson with 15 points, while Jake Flewelling and Nick Clark added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Drew Sotomayor chipped in with 10.
Dominic Roy led Wisdom with seven points.
Ellsworth boys 49, Presque Isle 38 — At Presque Isle Monday, Ellsworth outscored the Wildcats in the fourth quarter by a 17-1 margin to earn the victory.
The Eagles trailed by 11 points at halftime before storming back. Bruce St. Peter and Bryce Harmon each scored 10 points to lead the winners.
Ben Buckley and Chase Norton each netted 11 points for Presque Isle.
Southern Aroostook girls 39, Ashland 35 — One losing streak ended and another continued when the Hornets and Warriors met in Ashland Saturday. In the end, Kennedi Smith poured in 15 points and Cassidy Lyons chipped in with 11 more to lead SA to their first win.
Laura Sturgeon scored 11 points and Morgan Doughty added 10 for the Hornets. Southern Aroostook is now 1-5 and Ashland fell to 0-6.
Southern Aroostook boys 83, Ashland 44 — Also at Ashland Saturday, the sophomore duo Jackson Mathers and Nolan Altvater combined for 36 points to carry the Warriors to another victory.
Mathers and Altvater had 18 points each, while Cameron Landry added 16 more for the Warriors of Dyer Brook.
Mark Chasse led Ashland with 15 points, while Cody Blair and Michael Cook had 11 and nine points, respectively.
Washburn boys 80, Van Buren 36 — The Beavers stayed undefeated as they opened with a 19-6 scoring run in the first quarter and also outscored the Crusaders by a 22-4 margin in the fourth quarter.
Washburn banged in 15 three-pointers in the contest, with seven different players contributing at least one each during the Saturday evening home contest.
Jarrett Olson and Derek Baker led Washburn with 20 and 17 points, respectively. Olson drained six three-pointers and Baker five. Cameron Bragg added nine points and Kenny Irving tallied eight.
Justin Sytulek scored a game-high 19 points for Van Buren, which fell to 3-2 overall.
Fort Fairfield boys 61, Central Aroostook 25 — In a matinee game Saturday in Fort Fairfield, Robbie Watson headed a quartet of double-figure scorers with 14 points as the Tigers easily handled the Panthers.
Chris Giberson scored 13 points for Fort Fairfield, while Hunter Beaulieu and Isaac Cyr posted 10 each.
Colby Kingsbury paced the short-handed Central Aroostook squad with six points.
Presque Isle girls 72, Hermon 34 — At Presque Isle last Tuesday, Graham hit seven three-pointers on her way to a game-high 27 points to propel the Wildcats to victory.
Kingsbury tossed in 21 points for the winners.
Hermon was led by Kailee Dunton’s nine points.
Van Buren girls 44, Easton 38 —Felisha Bouchard’s 22-point, 14-rebound performance helped the Crusaders edge the Bears in Easton last Tuesday.
Emily Dumond provided 11 points and eight rebounds and Courtney Parent added nine points for Van Buren.
Ward paced Easton with 18 points and Hannah Ferris chipped in with eight more.
Washburn girls 95, Southern Aroostook 13 —Mackenzie Worcester had double figures in four statistical categories, compiling 32 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds and 10 steals to lead Washburn past Southern Aroostook last Tuesday in Dyer Brook.
Joan Overman added 21 points and Laina Mette chipped in with 10 for the unbeaten Beavers.
Cassidy Lyons netted six points to lead Southern Aroostook, which was shut out during the first half.
Wisdom girls 48, Ashland 23 — At Ashland last Tuesday, Rylee Wright led all scorers with 20 points to key the Pioneers.
Freshman Mackenzie Carter led Ashland with seven points.
Hermon boys 44, Presque Isle 42 —Tyler Beaton tossed in a game-high 14 points as the Hawks held off the Wildcats last Tuesday in Presque Isle. Mark Anthony came off the bench and chipped in with 12 points for Hermon, who improved to 4-1 with the win.
Freshman Griffin Guerrette led Presque Isle with 12 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter. Norton posted nine points on three three-pointers.
Ashland boys 59, Wisdom 33 — Last Tuesday at Ashland, Blair netted a game-high 27 points to help the Hornets to the win. Cook added 12 points for Ashland.
