The Caribou Vikings did not play well Monday, but still managed to garner their fourth victory of the season against just one loss.
Caribou’s brother combination of Dayne and Donovan Savage combined for just two field goals, but were able to hold off Mount Desert Island in a home game. The Trojans entered the game with an 0-4 mark, but trailed by only a point after three quarters of play before Caribou gained control. The Vikings led by 10 in the late going, but the Trojans hit a couple late threes to account for the final margin.
The Vikings, who knocked off Houlton on the road last Tuesday, took on Ellsworth, which held a 5-1 record, yesterday afternoon. Caribou is now preparing for a rematch at home against Old Town Saturday. The Vikings were beaten by the defending Class B state champs by 24 points in their first meeting Dec. 20.
The Caribou girls were at 1-3 following a decisive loss to MDI Monday. They also played Ellsworth yesterday and will meet up against the Coyotes of Old Town at home Saturday.
The Limestone-MSSM teams played home games Monday against East Grand, with the girls falling by 20 points and the boys able to end a six-game losing streak with a 10-point win. The Eagle girls are now 3-5 and the boys 2-6.
The Washburn Beavers are undefeated and at the top in both the girls’ and boys’ Class D Heal Point standings. The squads were both victorious in their only contests last week, with the girls beating Southern Aroostook and the boys downing Van Buren.
The Washburn girls were 5-0 entering last night’s game against Central Aroostook in Mars Hill. They host Washburn Friday and are at Ashland Saturday, with a huge game looming next Tuesday against Fort Fairfield, which is also undefeated at 4-0 and in seventh position.
The Beaver boys face a quiet week with just one game scheduled — home against Wisdom Friday.
The Fort Fairfield Tigers eased past Central Aroostook in boys’ action Saturday to improve to 5-1 overall. Fort is in third place, behind only Washburn and Schenck of East Millinocket.

Caribou boys 60, Mount Desert Island 56 — At Caribou, clutch fourth-quarter foul shooting by the Vikings sealed the win at home Monday.
Senior guard Dayne Savage had just two field goals, but still led the 4-1 Vikings with 20 points thanks to his accuracy from the foul line. Ricky Sheldon scored a career-best 14 points and Colby Holdsworth contributed 11.
Riley Swanson scored 20 points and Aaron Snurkowski chipped in with 11 more for the Trojans, who fell to 0-5.
Mount Desert Island girls 67, Caribou 38 — Darcy Kanu came off the bench to score 15 points to spark MDI’s victory Monday at CHS.
Sierra Tapley also recorded 15 points as part of a balanced attack. The Trojans jumped out to a 29-9 first- quarter lead en route to their sixth win of the season without a loss.
For Caribou, which fell to 1-3, Maddie Doucette and Bria Judd each tallied 10 points while Gabrielle Marquis notched seven.
Limestone-MSSM boys 49, East Grand 39 — At Limestone Monday, Alex Sprague scored a game-high 13 points to lead the home team to the win, which ended a six-game losing streak.
Victor Negron added 12 points for the Eagles.
Jimmy Brittain and Philip Farley each had 12 points for East Grand.
EG 52, Limestone-MSSM 32 — The East Grand Vikings remained undefeated, using a 34-21 scoring run in the second half to beat the Eagles Monday in Limestone.
Allison McEwen scored 19 points and Sarah Stoddard had 17 for East Grand.
Kassee Albert netted 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eagles, while Jacinta Deschaine also was in double figures in rebounds with 11.
Washburn boys 80, Van Buren 36 — The Beavers stayed undefeated as they opened with a 19-6 scoring run in the first quarter and also outscored the Crusaders by a 22-4 margin in the fourth quarter.
Washburn banged in 15 three-pointers in the contest, with seven different players contributing at least one each during the Saturday evening home contest.
Jarrett Olson and Derek Baker led Washburn with 20 and 17 points, respectively. Olson drained six three-pointers and Baker five. Cameron Bragg added nine points and Kenny Irving tallied eight.
Justin Sytulek scored a game-high 19 points for Van Buren, which fell to 3-2 overall.
Fort Fairfield boys 61, Central Aroostook 25 — In a matinee game Saturday in Fort Fairfield, Robbie Watson headed a quartet of double-figure scorers with 14 points as the Tigers easily handled the Panthers.
Chris Giberson scored 13 points for Fort Fairfield, while Hunter Beaulieu and Isaac Cyr posted 10 each.
Colby Kingsbury paced the short-handed Central Aroostook squad with six points.
Washburn girls 95, Southern Aroostook 13 —Mackenzie Worcester had double figures in four statistical categories, compiling 32 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds and 10 steals to lead Washburn past Southern Aroostook last Tuesday in Dyer Brook.
Joan Overman added 21 points and Laina Mette chipped in with 10 for the unbeaten Beavers.
Cassidy Lyons netted six points to lead Southern Aroostook, which was shut out during the first half.
Caribou boys 54, Houlton 49 — Dayne Savage scored 22 points, including the 1,000th of his career, as the Vikings knocked the Shiretowners from the ranks of the undefeated last Tuesday in Houlton.
Savage scored his milestone point on an elbow jumper in the second quarter and then exploded for 15 points in the third quarter. Caribou went 7 for 10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to hold off a late challenge by the Shires.
Donovan Savage added 13 points for the Vikings and Taylor Thibodeau chipped in 10.
Kyle Bouchard had a game-high 27 points, with 13 coming in the fourth quarter, to lead Houlton.
