Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
Many children fantasize about having a pet and some are content with a bird, kitten or puppy. Then, there are the others who want a horse; oh, yes!
Bridget Heos has written “Do You Really Want A Horse?” to help parents educate these as to the care and needs of a horse.
She discusses the space needed for grazing, the building for shelter, the food requirements and vet care. And, she doesn’t mince words concerning the cleaning, clipping and grooming necessary. One thing folks don’t often consider is the time involved in training and socializing. One question gains a chuckle: Heos asks the question of the horse: “Do you really want a person?”
Illustrations by Katya Longhi are dreamy and border on abstract, yet are colorful and engaging.
Included are websites and reference books listed to shovel deeper into the topic which might be a good idea.
There is a series of such books on the topics of birds, cats, dogs, hamsters and rabbits. Of course, there are numerous books in Cary Children’s Library on care of many animals.
