Houlton’s first baby of year arrives at Houlton Regional Hospital

HOULTON, Maine — Just a day late, but Ryland Jacoby Samuel Shaw arrived as Houlton Regional Hospital’s New Year’s baby.
Ryland Jacoby Samuel, 11 pounds and 22 inches long, was born on Jan. 2 at 10:22 a.m. His parents are Jocelyn Haney and Jonathan Shaw of Houlton. He joins big brother Caden, 11, and big sister Lily, 4.

His name has significant family meaning for his parents. Ryland was derived from the name of Haney’s brother, Ryan, who was born on the same day, but died of SIDS in the early 1980s and Samuel is in memory of Shaw’s grandfather. And, of course, Jacoby, both parents like the name.
Ryland is the grandson of Amy and Dean Gardiner of Hodgdon, along with Peter and Darlene Shaw of Belfast.
As the New Year’s baby, staff at Houlton Regional Hospital along with the following businesses, Cameron’s Market, Varney Agency, Maine Books for Maine Kids, Raising Readers, Daigle Oil Company and Hannafords, presented the couple with basket of goodies. Machias Savings Bank also donated a basket for the couple and their baby. Both baskets contained donated items such as books, bibs, blankets and other newborn necessities.
