Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster, former residents of Island Falls, have been recent visitors at the homes of Patti Hartin and yours truly. It had been several months since their last visit so they had a great lot to catch up on in the short time they had for a visit. The weather, for once, cooperated, and they made it back up to Caribou without any problems.
Have had a letter from Clayton Varney, now residing in Humble, Texas, with his daughter, Cheryl and family, and all is well there. He did say that they had had a short spell of cold weather, but nothing like what he was used to when living here in Aroostook County.
Despite the bitter cold we have had recently, I still venture out with the birdseed and peanut butter mixture to keep all my feathered friends happy. And they really do go for the mixture, for as soon as I spread it on the tree limbs, the chickadees, nuthatches, juncos, and, of course, the small and big woodpeckers are there to get their fill. And I have one lone, little red squirrel who still shows up about noon and he will eat what is left of the peanut butter and lard mixture.
Seems as though it is something that they all really like, and maybe need, to sustain them during a bad cold spell.
Of course, no need to say it, really, but the big gray squirrel is still with me and is still hanging upside down with his nose in the birdfeeder every day.
The other evening, after I had put out the bread and apples for the deer, I looked out to see if they had arrived and there they were, six of them, munching away. When that was gone they all walked around my house to the front lawn where I had put more bread and apples, and they sure finished all that in no time. It was half dark when they arrived, so if any of my neighbors were looking they sure got a good look at the six deer.
