STOCKHOLM – Gordon A. Sund passed away at his home in Stockholm after an extended illness on January 11, 2015. He was born on March 6, 1933, in Gardner, Mass., the son of Walter and Lillian (Niemi) Sund.
Upon graduation from Gardner High, Gordon entered the Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. At one point, Gordon and his oldest brother, Bob, were stationed on the same ship.
On September 22, 1956, Gordon married Norma Sandstorm. Gordon and Norma stayed in the Gardner area until the summer of 1964, and then moved to their home in Stockholm, ME, where they have lived ever since.
Upon his discharge from the Navy, Gordon attended Becker Junior College for a year and worked in the Gardner area. When Gordon moved to Maine, he worked construction and was a member of the United Carpenters and Mill Rights Union; taking him to many of the paper mills around the state.
Sports was always a big part of Gordon’s life. As a child and in his young adult life, Gordon was an accomplished athlete in the Gardner area. He played everything imaginable, but fast-pitch softball was his game of choice. One of his proudest moments was being a part of the 1963 Napoleon Club team that won the class “B” Massachusetts state championship in men’s fast-pitch softball. When he moved to Northern Maine, Gordon continued to play softball, but also took up hunting and fishing, which he enjoyed immensely. In later life, he became an avid golfer.
Gordon was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Stockholm. He served on the church council and as financial secretary for the past twenty years. Gordon was also a life time member of the American Legion, Perkins/ Plourde Post 136.
In retirement, Gordon enjoyed gardening, golfing, watching anything that pertained to sports (especially the Red Sox and Patriots), and a lively game of Scat on Thursday with “the boys.”
He is survived by his wife, Norma, of 58 years; four children: Jon of Stockholm, Michael and his wife, Gloria, of Stockholm, Peter and his wife, Shelley, of Bangor, and Donna and her special friend, Mike, of Beverly Mass.; 11 grandchildren: Hope, Jeanne, Lily, Breanna, Kathryn, Karl, Hallie, Hanna, Christopher, Seth, and Samantha; four great-grandchildren: Landen, Kiera, Aubrey, and AJ.
In addition to his parents, Gordon was predeceased by brothers, Robert Sund of Gardner, Mass., William Sund of Kingwood, TX; and sister, Sandra Hopkins of Westport Island, ME.
The family would like to express gratitude to Dr. James Harris and the staff at the Northern Maine Medical Center along with the staff at Forest Hills for the wonderful care given to Gordon. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to Gordon’s daughter-in-law, Gloria, who served as his primary caregiver and angel of mercy over these last few weeks as Gordon passed at home.
