Gantnier receives PROBUS Club scholarship
At the recent PROBUS Club of Aroostook meeting, Helen McConnell, representing the scholarship committee, presented James Gantnier II with a scholarship award.
Gantnier, a graduate of Ashland District School, is majoring in diesel hydraulics at NMCC and was on the Dean’s List this past semester. His goal is to own and operate his own diesel mechanic business in Aroostook County.
The PROBUS Club of Central Aroostook offers an annual scholarship to high school graduates who are interested in furthering their education by attending NMCC. With interest high, PROBUS has received applications from five different high school districts in The County. Students in the Aroostook area interested in applying for a scholarship should contact their high school guidance counselor for guidelines and an application. The student must complete the first semester ranking period at NMCC.
PROBUS is an association of retired and semi-retired persons who join together in autonomous clubs throughout the world. While PROBUS is an abbreviation of the words PRO-fessional and BUS-iness, membership is not restricted to these two groups, and also embraces former executives of government and other organizations “who have had some measure of responsibility in any field of endeavor.”
According to their website, the purpose of PROBUS is to provide regular gatherings of those, who in retirement, appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and of a similar level of interest. All clubs are sponsored by Rotary, but on formation are autonomous — independent of Rotary or any other organization and independent of each other.
On a local level, monthly meetings defined as nonpolitical, nonsectarian, nonprofit and non-fundraising are held.
