City offers year-round recycling education
for area youth
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Learning about recycling will be a lot easier for local students, thanks to a recent grant the city received which will enable officials to distribute educational materials to area youth.
“Although National Recycling Day is in November, the city of Presque Isle is gearing up for year-round recycling education for area youth. In celebration of National Recycling Day, recycling fact sheets, activity sheets and a link to an online recycling game were placed on the city’s website at http://presqueislemaine.gov/just-for-kids in November,” said Kim Smith, the city’s grant writer.
The fact sheets contain recycling information for aluminum, paper, batteries and cardboard. The recycling activity sheets feature connect-the-dots, recycling-themed coloring pages, and matching the right recycling bin to the recyclable.
“In addition, the city recently received a grant from the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust with which to fabricate two traveling interactive recycling education tools. One will be a ‘Muppet’ (think Oscar the Grouch, only friendly) who resides in a garbage can and provides hands-on recycling education for children. The second will be a rolling interactive ‘sign’ with questions and answers available by moving pieces on the sign,” said Smith.
Once the traveling educational pieces are ready in early spring, municipal representatives will be available to visit area schools to provide recycling education.
