Houlton-made cigars — Readers will do well to remember that Houlton too, (as well as Bangor) has a cigar factory that employs a large crew the year round. Smokers, when you buy cigars try “Houlton made” and you will be helping the old town a whole lot.
Local business news — Chas. H. Harmon, the insurance and real estate dealer, has moved his office from the Merritt Block in Union Square to Room 9 in the Mansur Block. G. T. Holt, the Optometrist, will only be in Houlton a short time longer; those wishing their eyes attended to or glasses fitted should telephone 14-5 at once.

For the milk fund — A public supper hosted by the Houlton Woman’s Club, assisted by the American Legion Auxiliary, will be held Tuesday for the benefit of the school “Milk Fund.” This most worthy project supplies milk to undernourished, needy children in the town schools and averages a cost of about $110 a month.
New student nurses — A new class of student nurses entered the Aroostook General Hospital Monday, the 68th class since the hospital opened in 1906. Among those in the new class are: Misses Avis Burns of Bridgewater, Eva Holmes of New Limerick and Ruby Dickinson of Island Falls.

Whittier Church elects officers — The annual meeting of Whittier Congregational Church of Island Falls was held with the following officers elected: Mr. Dunphy, moderator; Mary Berry, clerk; Helen Shields, treasurer; Hazel Pettengill, assistant treasurer and Maureen Emerson, treasurer for benevolences.
SAD increase requested — School Administrative District 29, comprising Houlton, Hammond, Littleton and Monticello, is asking for $46,724.78 more in tax monies this year than was requested a year ago. Completion of the new $1 million addition to Houlton’s present high school, affording the district a junior-senior high, will mean the hiring of 10 additional faculty members.

Snow Run hits pavement — Preparations are underway for the ninth running of the Wild Katahdin Trust Snow Run, which this year, will be part of the Winterfest activities. The run will feature 83-year-old Aroostook County guru of running, Sam Oullette as race starter.
