100 Years Ago-Feb. 11, 1915
• Weather ups and downs — The following is the reading of the thermometer at 6 o’clock in the morning for the past week, as taken from the Republican’s thermometer: Feb. 5, 3 below zero; Feb. 6, 30 above zero; Feb. 7, 34 above zero; Feb. 8, 9 and 10, 10 above zero; and Feb. 11, 20 below zero.
• Downtown news — The beginning of the Post Office at Caribou is provided for with an appropriation of $1,000. H.O. Spencer, jeweler, has recently added a larger and better National cash register, also a new showcase, to his already well-equipped jewelry store.
75 Years Ago-Feb. 8, 1940
• Caribou area citizens — The following local persons were among those naturalized at the February term of court, at Caribou, Feb. 7, 1940: Yvonne Dube, Elzear Dube, Elsie Blanche Monteith, Hazel Avis Holmes, Gladys Diston Lockhart and Mary Louise Nelson, all of Caribou; Joseph Laverdiere of Van Buren; and Agatha Boies Beaulieu of Hamlin.
• Winter Carnival time — The construction of an ice castle is now in operation on the Main and Sweden Street square. Carnival queens will be crowned at a coronation ceremony with the Hammond electric organ and a chorus of the finest voices in Aroostook assisting. Following the coronation will be the carnival ball with the best music ever brought to Aroostook, furnished by the Fenton Brothers Orchestra.
50 Years Ago-Feb. 11 1965
• New officers — Mrs. Velma Cochran was elected regent of the Daughters of the British Empire at the monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Roy Wyman. Also elected: Mrs. Jennie Wyman, vice regent; Mrs. Marjorie Shaw, secretary; Mrs. Angie Vance, treasurer; Mrs. Ina Ferguson, flower fund chairman; Mrs. Irene Whittier, Scripture readings; and Mrs. Guelda Michaud, reporter.
• Celebrating Scouts — The local Boy Scouts’ annual Blue and Gold Banquet will be held Feb. 16 at the Junior High School, with Scoutmaster Peter Beaulieu as master of ceremonies. The event is in observance of Boy Scout Week, Feb. 7-13, the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America.

• All-State musicians — Four Caribou High School students were honored with state music placements. Bethany Souther and William Gleason were named to the All-State Chorus, while Michelle Jenkins and Julie Ayer were chosen for the All-State Orchestra.
• Carnival plans — The following events are among those planned during the Feb. 9-25 Winter Carnival: Father-daughter dance, Mardi Gras ball, snowmobile cookout, ladies’ night, sportsmen’s banquet, state cribbage tournament, Little Miss and Miss Caribou pageants, snow sculpture competitions, senior bowling and children’s sliding.
