Motion picture mania — It seems only a few months ago that the first motion picture show came to Houlton. Today there is not a civilized country in the world without these exhibitions.
Potato flour? — Why is not this a proper time to manufacture potato flour, right here in Maine? Wheat at $1.65, flour at $9.50 per barrel, and the thousands of potatoes in Maine cellars, too cheap to pay to haul to market. (Prices in Houlton have recently been reported as low as 50 cents a barrel). – Maine Farmer.

The Lord’s Day — The possibility loomed this week that there would hereafter be no skating in the new Houlton Roller Rink on Sundays, the latest in a long series of attempts by local clergy to prevent Sunday opening of the rink. In a sermon last Sunday in the First Baptist Church, Rev. P. R. Hayden made a stirring appeal to automobile owners to buy their gasoline on Saturday rather than Sunday.

Carhops wanted — The advertisement reads: “Wanted – 4 Girls to Work as Car Hops in Bangor, Me,” Must be between ages of 18 and 25, neat in appearance. Submit photo with complete resume to Riverview Drive In.
Farmers surveyed — Aroostook County is one of 400 counties in the United States included in a national study of farm uses of pesticides. Linwood Wellington will begin interviewing farmers starting Feb. 11.
Foster and Ladd in Alaskan exercise — Army Pfc. Dana E. Foster, son of Murray C. Foster of Bridgewater, and Pfc. Baree A. Ladd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald M. Ladd of Houlton, are participating in Exercise Polar Strike, a 14-day winter field training exercise scheduled to end Feb. 17 in Alaska.

Bestsellers — The current “Best Sellers” list of soft cover books at York’s Bookstore includes: “All I Really Needed to Know I learned in Kindergarten,” by Robert Fulghum; “The Sands of Time,” by Sidney Sheldon; and “The Drawing of the Three,” by Stephen King.
A feast for ‘all things winter’ — Houlton’s Winterfest activities began Saturday with cross-country skiing behind Dunn Furniture Company and also featured Retail Trade Board prizes, Yamafest snowmobiling events, public skating, varsity basketball, the Wild Katahdin Trust Snow Run, snow sculptures, dancing, food, and a wiffle snowball tournament.
